  1. Ok, here is my setup:
    ATI AIW 7500, P4 1.6GHz, 768MB PC133 RAM, MMC 9.01
I captured video using the default MMC "MPEG4" setting and it turns out to be DivX. It plays just fine on my PC but I need to distribute the video to my colleagues and they don't have any DivX codecs installed, nor do they want to mess with that. Some of them have Windows Media Player 6.4 (basic install) and some have WMP 9.0.

So my question is, how do I capture a garden-variety MPEG4 file that can play in everyone's PC? Do I need to install an older MPEG4 codec such as Microsoft's MPEG4 v1 or v2? If so, how do I get MMC to recognize that codec?

Thanks in advance for any help.

PS - The files need to remain small, so I must capture at about 200kbps.

    Hello,

Check their pcs and see which video codecs they have preinstalled. Then capture to that. That way they won't have to install new codecs.

  3. Or

You could try a self contained, meaning it's not reliant on the codecs of the intended viewers pc, media player.

You're friends won't be doing anything to their system with VLC; I believe it even comes in zip form so you can just unpack to a folder and run the program from there.

Why don't you try MPEG-2? Windows Media Player will handle that.

No it won't, you need a MPEG-2 decoder, which come with software dvd players.

  6. Thanks for all the responses.

I have thousands of colleagues spread across the nation, so I can't really check every PC. I need a universal file.

A lot of users will have limited computer skills, so a separate app is not an option.

MPEG 2 does not do well at low bitrate. I actually tried this, and MMC will only let me go as low at 500kbps in MPEG 2. I need to capture around 200kbps.

    Anyone else?

you could try converting to a .wmv file. as long as the people have windows, they can play it.

  8. Yeah MPEG-4 or WMV7 should work with Win98SE->XP,the MPEG-4 ACM can be d/l HERE.You could add the MPEG-4 codec with the disc just in case.
Don't expect great quality with 200kbps.
