"No denying the poacher is all too common, but not all hunters fall into that category. There presently isn't any practical alternative to hunting, unless we're willing to be overrun with starving deer. Hate the *******, yahoo, so-called "hunters", though."
I understand the need for population control. You totally nailed it with the "yahoo hunters" comment. There are people around this area that when you tell them "hey, I just saw a bear!" Their like, "did ya shoot it?"
Everything is all about the kill.
Every once in a while you'll hear reports that someone has spotted a mountain lion in the area... everyone's first reaction is to hunt it down and kill it. It's like it doesn't exist unless you can shoot it and hang its carcass on your wall.
Disclaimer: I am in no way an animal rights nut. I think animals, deserve a little more respect than just to be consider targets 365 days a year.

I've hunted. My father was Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone rolled into one. Not to mention; an staunch member of the NRA (until he started realizing that they seemed to be obsessed with money). I really enjoy the outdoors, especially fall. Probably the main reason why I live in the country and only work in the city. -

My dad used to wear this hat made from Muskrat pelts when he would hunt. Add that to his love for hunting with a flint lock during muzzle-loader season...

I went deer slapping once. But only do it to a doe.
You'll be running back up the tree stand and waiting there for a while before a buck leaves. They get startled for a moment and then come and charge. It's the worst in the spring time when they are all horny.

their mating season is in the fall - not spring

Kind of an odd story but I know a guy who got attacked by a buck.
He had came back from hunting and went out behind the barn to take a piss and a good sized buck was at the edge of the cornfield and as he was taking a piss the deer attacked him. He had 13 stitches down his left cheek where the front hoof caught him.
I don't know whether the deer was attracted to the doe scent he had been using or if maybe he was using mule deer scent and the buck was there to fight. But I thought it was definitely a strange happening. My first thought was maybe the deer had rabbies, but they said that when his 2 friends came around the side of the barn to see what the hell was going on, the deer took off and they didn't get it shot.
I bet there will be more of those types happenings before long, with all these city folks moving out to the country, thinking deer are cute and cuddlie...start feeding them and they will come back....feed them long enough and sooner or later, you are going to run out of food and they will want more. A 250 lb hungry deer attacking you for food is not so cute and cuddlie. People in our area set mineral blocks out for them in their yard and only farmers with woods will let you hunt their property. If Larry and Joanne who work in Dayton own a big property, with woods...they won't let anyone hunt their property....they love the deer, why would anyone want to shoot such a beautiful animal???

This is what I used to go see all of the time, but you can't shoot them. THey are white deer and once in a while you'll see an albino, but the whites are most common to see at the fences by the roadside. It's illegal to hunt them. It's illegal to shoot any ALL WHITE deer in NY. They must have a natural patch of brown somewhere, Larger than 6" in diameter.
