Can somebody please tell me the best way to capture from VHS in order to get it to DivX.]
I have a P3 733, 128mb pc133 sdram, lifeveiw tv tuner card, 20gb hdd with a 4x4x32 on the same ide as slave, 6gb hdd with a dvd on same ide as slave.
Will I have to capture it to a avi file and use heaps of space then convert it? or is it possible to go directly to divx?
I dont think my system will beable to encode to divx and mp3 at the same time.
Is the setup I have in regard to the ide the best?
Im quite new to this, altough I have done a lot of dvd>divx.
There didn't seem to be a search function, or I couldn't see it anywhere.
Thanks, Karl from New Zealand

nz max,
NO!
Curious. . . Why would you think that legitimate companies who make
capture cards incorporate a STOLEN hacked codec? ...and
sell it? ? ?
So, in answer, NO, there no such real-time DivX capture card.
Yes, you'll have to catpure it to AVI. Unless you have an hardware MPEG card
or real-time MPEG encoder card (ATI puts out a lot of these crappy real-time cards),
you're goona have to go the AVI route. But, for you, these ATI real-time will
do just perfect!! As, divx is pretty crapy anyways. Have a look into these
cards, if you are in the market for them. If you just want mpeg1 type (divx)
then go for the real-time capture card, ATI-TV Wonder, else if you want
mpeg1/2 (DivX) then go for the ATI Rage Fury. Both of these cards are pretty
cheap in price tv wonder is $79 and the rage fury is $79 also.
I don't no how long your clips will be, but you'll need a minimu of 20gigs for AVI
catpure, unless you break it up into 15min to 1/2 hour segments, which is
just a good.
I'm assuming you don't have a capture card, so are you looking for one?

The only thing to do is try and see how many dropped frames you get. If you werte capping for VCD purposes I'd say Huffyuv and VirtualDub, but if you're goal is simply a DivX / mp3 avi clip, try to do a cap in VirtualDub using DivX as your video compression codec. Note: DO NOT do this if you ever want to VCD this clip though.
