f8 , but you got to be quick -- or edit the start up and give yourself more time ..

if you see 'starting windows" , you were already to late

f8 does nothing at bios bootup

When I boot up I get the following message after bios boots and windows tries

    stop c0000221(bad image checksum)
    the image urlmon.dll possibly corrupt
the header check sum does not match
    the computed check sum

This just keeps cycling, starting the boot process again. Please help.

Try different 'F' keys. I have one computer that uses 'F6' and a laptop that uses 'esc'. The laptop on occasion will not go to safe mode with any key. Your MB manual should tell you which key will work.

Sounds like even safe mode may not work. A repair may be in order. Try booting from the XP CD and choosing repair.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

repair keeps the data as long as you do not format.

You can download a copy of the file from here:

    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?urlmon

Or, since you must being using another machine (to write your forum post) you could "borrow a copy from that machine. unfortuately, if your running NTFS file system your out of luck because you can use a WIn98-type boot disk to put the file in C:\windows\system32. If you are using FAT32 you can.

  9. You could try downloading Slax Linux - www.slax.org - its a distro of linux that runs completely off cd, just stick it in at startup. This could let you backup your data if you can't get into windows or safe-mode.

    Garibaldi,

    Quit pushing linux on people.

    They might not want it.

You are not helping anyone by pushing linux.

BTW, there are other versions of linux.

Alright, I am sorry. I just want to suggest possible solutions that could get people out of a jam. Especially because unless you are aware of such a thing as live-cd, you probably wouldn't consider it as an option when having problems. As far as other distros, I've tried alot of other live-cd distros and found those two in my opinion to be the most effective in this type of situation.

  12. There are other environments besides linux that can run off CD and give basic tools. I use Bart's PE, and have several AV, anti-spyware, anti-trojan, registry editor, and file management tools at my disposal. Very nice.

  13. Could you tell me what a couple of those other enviroments are (preferably windows user friendly ones). I don't have any particular need for one right now but it sounds pretty handy to have (and could have helped out a lot in the past).
