  1. I have one of those Philips dv642 players, and it's pretty great; but I have one video that I can only get to play video, the audio is silent. I looked at the file in Gspot, and I think the problem is that the audio is WMA format (gspot says "Divx (same as wma) (0x0161)").

I've heard that it might be possible to convert audio in Divx without disturbing or having to reencode the video. Is this true? How can I convert my audio from WMA to MP3 so that I can hear it when I play it in my dvd player?

I'd extract the wma using VirtualDub, then decode to wav (Google "wma to wav").
Then load the AVI back in VirtualDub, Select WAV audio and your wav file, set audio to full processing, select your codec and codec options (mp3) under compression, then File -> Save as AVI

  3. And set VirtualDub to Video -> Direct Stream Copy in the last step.

Ah - Yes, of course. Forgot that.

    Thanks, junkmalle.

  5. Thanks guys, but I still have a problem! The file that results from this is more than 700 mb in size and thus will not fit on a single cd. I even used 128kbps mp3 bitrate when I thought I would be able to use something better. The original file was only 640 mb in size! Am I doing something wrong?
I did deviate from your instructions a bit. I couldn't figure out how to extract the wma using VirtualDub, so I used the File -> Save WAV option to create a WAV file (42mb in size) and then used that file to follow the rest of your directions.

How long (in time) is your AVI? 42 MB wav is about 4 minutes worth. To go your route, you have to turn full processing on, and select no compression under compression. Otherwise, VDub will just extract the audio stream in the format it is in the AVI, and stick a .wav extension on it.
But your size prob might not be cured by that - It may ell be a low bit rate wma that might easily be twice as big when converted to 128 kbps mp3.
