Despite a CD-R saying its capacity is 700MB, I've been burning VCDs with almost 800MB. Now, I'm moving into SVCD but they don't seem to be able to do the same thing. Only up to 700MB or I'm doing something wrong. Can someone please clear this up for me? Thanks.

Svcd can be burned at 800 mb to a 70 minute cd but it has to be authored as svcd, nero can do this with the super video comiplation or you can author with vcdeasy selecting svcd and saving as bin/cue files which are burned as image files.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
You stated: "Despite a CD-R saying its capacity is 700MB, I've been burning VCDs with almost 800MB." This is because the rated capacity on CDs is the mode-1 capacity, VCDs and SVCDs are burned in mode-2 format which allows up to approximately 800mb on a 700mb (mode-1) CD. If you have a 700mb mode-1 CD with the proper software and procedures you should be able to fit an SVCD compliant mpeg file that is near 800mb onto it. Maybe you should try another authoring program. I would suggest VCDEasy. It burns SVCDs also.

Svcd is burnt as special format... mode2
data Cdr are burnt as Mode1 which wastes space on error correction ! xvid/divx (film.avi), altho video files, are BURNT as data (re your other question)
normal data Cdr 700-704mb
normal svcd cdr 780mb
99min data Cdr 870mb
99 min svcd Cdr 980mb (check player for compatibility first!)Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.

Is it possible to burn data in mode-2?
This plan is so bad, it must be one of ours. -
Yes!! but not all drives can read it... anyway u wouldn't want to....lack of error correction....and therefore little errors can cause serious problems to the data, i think?
https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=451#comments <--- allows u to burn data in mode2, but i've never tried, never will and never will recommend it, but your choice..... -

OK, when I run my two eps through vcdeasy, it says the CD size will be 782 MB but the finished product is actually 888 MB in size. I did get a warning about auto padding but don't know what that means. Anyone know why the vcdeasy files are over 100 MB larger that what they are supposed to be?

Thanks freebird. Demuxing and remuxing the vid and audio did the trick. How does it solve the autopadding thing anyway? I appreciate the assist. Thanks again.

It has something to do with the way the file was encoded in the first place. If it was not encoded as a svcd it will require autopadding. Demuxing and remuxing is an easy fix though. I'm sorry I can't give you a more technical answer. I just know it works!
Glad it helped you!Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again") -

The CD-R says 700MB/80 min, I have this MPEG2 file at 785 MB, I tried using Nero and Video Easy to burn it as SVCD, and both indicated it's over the capacity of the CD-R by at least 10%. I have another MPEG2 file at about 699 MB, and it fitted right into a single CD-R when I burnt it with Nero for SVCD. Is there a way to "shrink" a MEPG file size by 10% with any of the tools such as TMPEGenc? -
You can encode the video file to a smaller size with TMPGEnc by adjusting the bitrate. But if you save the larger file as a BIN/CUE file and burn it as an image file (Mode-2) with NERO or other programs you can easily go over 800MB. I have a large stack of SVCDs converted from DVDs with DVD2SVCD that average 830MB and they play just fine.

namsilat,
I use vcdeasy to make an image of the mpegs with chapters and then use the use nero's SVCD option. VCDEasy does add 10MB to the image which would just put you over the limit. I would demux the audio and video, reencode the audio to a lower bitrate and mux the two together before running it through VCDEasy. Here is a guide that shows how to use VCDEasy. Just skip down halfway through the guide:

Just be sure you change the template to SVCD 1.0 where you see "VideoCD Type".
