Philps DVP642 - Will it play DivX files recored to a DVD-R

Saw a lot of posts for this player, mostly stuff I won't need to get into very much, but my main question was, if I grabbed bunch on AVI files and burned them to a DVD-R disc, will the player read them?

Currently I have a Toshiba SD-2800, I wanted to upgrade because I have a few PAL movies that the Toshiba will not touch but when I saw the DivX feature I focused on this unit. I know as soon as a DVD-R goes into the Toshiba, it detects it as a DVD and looks for the video folder and treats it as a DVD movie only... for the Philips, will it just treat the DVD-R as a data disc and read the AVI files? or do I have to put the AVI files on to CDR for the DivX feature to work?

Related question, will it read MP3 files on a DVD-R disc? or will it only read MP3's stored on a CDR?

Yes it will play them on a dvd -R or +R or +RW or -RW with no problems if the avi (divx) specs are ok. Don't push the bitrate too high. I stay under 2200kbs (usually 900 to 1800) and don't encode Qpel or GMC.
A simple menu will display the 1st 11 or 12 characters of the file name and you can select one and it will also play them in sequence.

You can intermix mp3 or create a dvd of mp3 only but there is a file limit per directory. I'm too lazy to look in my book but I think it's 99 mp3 per directory and 20 video's (mix of avi and/or mpeg) (yes in case you are wondering, it can also play mpeg1, mpeg2 and vob with ac3 audio without authoring a DVD.

Cool, thanks for the info... I don't do any encoding myself, just whatever AVi files I may come across so hopefully they'll work ok. Probably pick one up this weekend, but just wondered what to expect, my main need for a new one was the PAL/NTSC abilities, rest was more a perk.
