I rip my dvds onto my hd so i can make backups and sometimes i want to watch it to make sure it ripped correctly with no errors. I have PowerDVDXP and it can open DVD files through ifo files. I try to open up the ifo files to watch it so i can also check the subtitles on some movies. I open the ifo file and click play and it looks to the dvd drive for the disk. Is there a way that I can edit the ifo file so it doesn't look for the dvd in the drive and will play so i can access the subtitles and no breaks in the movie?

  2. In v5.0 of PowerDVD there is an option that allows you to play DVD from a HDD location

  3. another method you can try is downloading Media Player Classic, and associating *.IFO files with it.

It's a slick little player with options a' plenty. Does what you ask with a small memory footprint.

To come as close to "the real thing" as possible, I create an iso image of the DVD, open PowerDVD, mount the image with daemon tools. Now PowerDVD gets notification of the insertion of a new DVD, and starts playing. If all looks good & well, it's just to start DVDDecrypter and burn the image.

I already ripped the vobs to the hdd and I have the option set to copy the .ifo file also. AFTER I ripped the dvd to the hdd I open up PowerDVDXP and hit O then click Open DVD File From Hard Disk Drive. Then I click play and it looks for the dvd in the drive that I ripped it from.

Yes, that's what my PowerDVD does too. That's why I start PowerDVD without disc DVD in the drive, then mount the image.

  7. I am using Windows XP Media Centre Edition and using Demon tools, My DVD Library and DVDDecrypter to rip my DVDs to an img file, then through MCE My DVD Library (http://www.binnerup.dk/mce/mydvdcollection/) which gives you a database of your DVDs and you can play them.

My problem is that each DVD is 3-4GB and I am running out of disk space. Any ideas about compressing them and maintaining the quality and 5.1 soound track, or is that just a pipe dream?

You could always run them thru DVDShrink, but more than 70% compression starts to show visible signs even to the untrained eye... Not that much to do, except encode to some MPEG4 flavor...
