Brazilian thieves rob bus full of policemen
Suspects escape with cameras, wallets, sneakers
    Updated: 6:04 p.m. ET Sept. 15, 2004RIO DE JANEIRO

Forty-six Brazilian policemen traveling to a sports competition were caught with their guard down this week when four Brazilian thieves robbed the bus carrying them to the event.

The bus with 46 unarmed policemen from northeastern Paraiba state was headed to the city of Salvador in Bahia when two cars with armed robbers forced them to stop on the country’s main interstate highway Tuesday.

“The robbers took their cameras, cellular phones, wallets and even the sports uniforms and sneakers,” a police spokesman said.

The suspects, who escaped, apparently did not know the bus was full of police when they stopped it, he said.

“We are looking for them, but I cannot say there’s any particular ardor here due to the fact that policemen have been robbed.”

It was their day off. What would you expect? It's just funny to see it happen.

  5. Take a look at "City of God" and "Bus 174", both good movies about Brazil's gang problem. The 2nd is a documentary and goes more into issues with the police....

Yeah. A couple of the cops are probably corrupt and got together to hire a gong to rob the bus knowing it would be unarmed and told everyone not to attempt heroics. Then they collect insurance moneys on a few things along with selling the rest of the items on Brazil's black market.

That is funny. That is why I'll probably keep my SA trips limited to Chile.

A couple? More like a couple of cops were honest and the rest were on the take!

I wouldn't be surprised if that's how it really ended up. But what a way to degrade the local police in an area. That would definitely lower force confidence. It really does sound like an organized strategy from inside a police department.
