This is very strange. For some reason, when I try to play MPEG2 on PowerDVD, there is this weird black screen blocking the video. (I can see the video playing fine through the edges where the black screen is not covering.)

I have tried reinstalling PowerDVD but no luck. I can play fine with Media Player Classic but I would like to use PowerDVD.

  2. I'm having the same problem. WinDVD is also just showing a green screen. I'm sure it has something to do with the overlay, but nothing I've tried has fixed the problem. I tried loading new nVidia drivers but that did not help. I have a sinking feeling that XP Service Pack 2 is the culprit.

Let me know if you find a solution.

Oh my God! I can't believe other people have the same problem! I have had PowerDVD on the computer for a year and a half. I recall having the problem at the beginning. I do not remember how the situation resolved itself. The program had been working fine for a year and a half. Two weeks ago, it stopped working. I get the black screen (with video at the edges) with a DVD and MPEG files. However, the program works sporadically, like about once a week.

I have had a running dialog with Cyberlink. I have uninstalled and reinstalled many times. I have disabled the instant-messaging software (on their advice). I have disabled the anti-virus. I have used the selective startup option of msconfig. I have upgraded the video card and sound card drivers. I have disabled the screen saver.
I have done a diagnostic and sent them the log file. They have suggested that the aspi drivers could be corrupted and have advised me to download new ones from Adaptec. I tried to but I'm not sure if I did it correctly.
A previous post has suggested that XP Service Pack 2 could be to blame. I'm not sure. I installed SP2 about 3 months ago. The problem did not surface until two weeks ago. Cyberlink said that they will forward the problem to R & D. I have asked many times for someone to contact me by phone. No response.

Has anyone found a solution? Thank you very much.

I've got this problem too! It just started a few months ago by itself after everything was working fine. The strange thing is, I remember this happening to me before quite a while back, and I can't remember what I did to fix the problem.

I have an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro video card and Windows XP Home. If anyone came up with a fix, let me know please!

Easily a codec problem, or an overlay problem.

This may sound strange but try to play the DVD (or file) in WMP and PowerDvd at the same time. I've noticed that for some reason this tends to kick PowerDVD into shape. I know it sounds odd. Please write back and let me know what happens.

I think this all traces back to setup of overlay modes on NVidea cards and may relate to NVidea driver version.

I fixed this problem over a year ago and haven't dared to touch the settings or update the NVidea drivers since. I've got the overlay working on both the desktop and the S-Video out (dual monitor mode) but can't remember the settings.

ATI cards can do this too but the setups are more obvious, at least to me.

As Alan Silberlight posted above, I tried playing a DVD with Windows Media Player, then while that was playing I loaded up PowerDVD and started the DVD in that as well, and it works fine! Very odd.

by any chance, you guys perform any of the these:

    * install XP version pack (sp1/sp2 etc)
    * install any codec packs (divx; Xvid; Gspot) etc
    * installed a new graphics card
    * installed or revise a new graphics card driver
    * installed a new software player app
    .
    * have a sys crash, and files got crosslinked or deleted for any reason.

I've learnt that things don't go bad, unless you changed something, or
something/something's got screwed up and were either deleted or altered.
Sometimes, when we re-install, we make things worse. I know. I've seen
it happen to me many of many times.

If you've installed any codec packs, chances are, that this is the cause.
And, the best method to eliaviate this, is to first:

    * uninstall the player,
    * uninstall the codecs or codec pack
    * uninstall the graphics card drivers

    . then ... in reverse..

    * reinstall the graphics card drivers
    * reinstall the player.

Leave out the codec pack for now, and see if all else works again

In my case, I did install XP Service Pack #2. However, I recall having the same problem when I got the computer. That was in August, 2003.

I would like to write a letter to Cyberlink's corporate offices. Communicating with tech help is worthless.

Thank you very much for writing. It is much appreciated.

    Sincerely,

Ok had this problem myself with PowerDVD recently... Not to sure if you other people have solved it or not. But just incase anyone else has this problem I will post the solution that worked for me..

All I did was instal the following full codec pack from the following website.

    http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/

Once this was installed I rebooted my computer and then I could see the movie being played in PowerDVD..

So I hope this helps anyone else who has this problem..

I hope you've got adequate spyware protection, and I'd be interested to hear if you have any codec conflicts. Codec packs are a baaaaad idea.
    If in doubt, Google it.

HERE IS THE SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME:

I SIMPLY TURNED OFF MY "OBJECTDOCK"

Thanks to the GUYS who thought of this IDEA. I have done everything to get rid of the black screen but found nothing until I turned off my OBJECTDOCK.

I don't know what's in this OBJECTDOCK that conflicts with POWERDVD 6!

    Maybe they're enemies!
anything will go wrong any time!

Hi guys, I'm facing this problem recently and I do not have ObjectDock installed. Could the culprit be spyware/malware/virus?

I was also facing the same issue. When trying to play m2t files in PowerDVD, the screen remains black. After testing a while, I discovered a possible solution. Besides PowerDVD, I’m using the K-Lite Codec Pack. I found out when you turn off the Haali MPEG splitter, the problem could be solved.

To do this, go to the Start menu --> K-Lite Codec Pack --> Configuration --> Codec Tweak Tool. Then, scroll to ‘Disable the following filters’ and disable these filters:

    - MPEG TS splitter (Haali)
    - MPEG PS splitter (Haali)
    - MPEG splitter (Grabest)

After restarting PowerDVD, I was able to watch m2t files again perfectly! (As well as in PowerDVD, as Media Player Classic).

    Hi Guys;

This is the solution that works for me:

Go to Display properties then go to the ffg:

    SETTINGS
    - ADVANCE
    - TROUBLESHOOT
    - Then adjust Hardawre Acceleration until your Power DVD is working properly

Hope this works for you also.

    Happy watching...

Since this thread got me looking in the right direction...I thought I would reply...

My friend was having the same problem...I couldn't figure out why she was & I wasn't. After we shut down RocketDock & PowerDVD 5 started working again...I looked for a fix. We found out that moving the Dock to the bottom or sides fixed the problem but that still wasn't a fix to me...as PowerDVD stopped working as soon as the Dock was returned to the top.

The problem we found was in the Dock Length itself...I remembered that she a lot of Icons on her Dock & took a chance by making the Dock smaller...when we did PowerDVD started showing video again.

If the Dock is longer than the PowerDVD startup screen...PowerDVD will not show video.
Open PowerDVD...shrink this size of RocketDock or ObjectDock to the same size or smaller than the PowerDVD screen & it will fix this problem.
Just remember to check it if you ever add more Icons to your Dock.
