Welcome. I'm getting this for my sister and was researching it. Someone earlier mentioned the 3 year plan. They call it "Keep it new" & it's only $16.58. I'm hoping their is a macrovision hack. Sister wants to put all her Disney VHS movies onto dvd. I guess we can always use the macrovision filter from radio shack or a sima one, but disabling macrovision would be nice.
More info on 3 year keep it new plan quoted from walmart's website:

Wonder if it covers fast running clocks?
Will set up a test since I notist the clock on the iLO is running fast compared to a Radio Atomic clcock and to the 220. It look like it has ganed about 20 seconds In about two or three weeks.
Will reset it later today and see how fast it gains for the next two weeks. But it is gaining time.
Has anyone else noted the drift of the time clock? Not the time of a show but current time clock?
EDITED: Just reset the clock. It was 30 seconds fast. And judgeing by the post I made on Oct 30 it only took about 13 days to get out of sync by 30 seconds. So if true would need to reset the clock every 30 days or time recording of shows will be off. -
Audio glitch solved by new firmware?

Yes, it's true. It fixed mine. I'm watching carefully to see anything that looks unusual but so far it's smooth sailing.

belder:
I have the one without HD. My momorex discs don't say where they are made. It's a 25 spindle and the desks say: DVD+RW ReWritable 4.7 GB/120 min Video. They are 2.4X speed.
Then I also have a 25 spindle from Ridata. 4x DVD+RW data/video discs.
SOMEONE please help me and let me know what works. I need an answer from someone who does not have the HD version, because they do not seem to have the same problems as mine -
stefan0325;
Have you tried playing the suspect +RW's in other players, such as a friends? I have an iLO DVDR04 and have had no problems playing +RW media (several different brands including Memorex and Verbatim) recorded with it in my DVD players. I'm thinking you might have a faulty R04. Rather than pull your hair out just exchange the iLO unit for another one.Proud Member of the Unofficial LiteOn/iLO Beta Testers Club. -
I also had bought a 5 pack of Memorex +RW (seems like those were the only brand name that Walmart carries) when I bought the ILO. I haven't been able to use any of the +RW's on my other players (XBOX, APEX, Cyberhome...they do work on the computer though.). If I do copy that same Memorex +RW to another Memorex +RW with my computer, the copies will work fine (must have something to do with finalizing the Memorex brand). The disc that came with the iLO seems to work in the APEX and Cyberhome, but act flakey. If I copy directly to a Memorex + R and finalize right away on the iLO, they will work on any player I have.
When I bought the iLO about a month ago, iLO's website originally did say that the Memorex +RW was not supported, but the +R was. It has since changed and if you look at the FAQ site now, it says that RW is supported (may be a typo?) -
I am getting a hum on the cable input of my DVDR04 iLO. If I watch the channels through the iLO, and if I record off cable direct there is a slight hum on the line. There is no hum present when going through the cable box, or any other AV input (only cable "f" connection). It also records the hum, which is present on playback. The hum goes away when I go into setup screens while I am still able to watch the channels in a smaller box. I contacted iLO "un-tech" support, and they told me to unplug the unit and replug back in, then to make sure it is away from any magnetic devices. I took the unit back yesterday, and the new one does it as well. I usually don't record off cable direct as I go throught the digital cable box and s-video out to the iLO...no problems that way.
-
Could a isolation filter on the input work. Need to test this also to see if it removes some of the line problem I have.
A filter is basacally a 75ohm to 300 to 300 to 75 ohm converter. Or a 75ohm to 75ohm seperated by a broadband transformer. Some one had a post here on making one or buying one.
EDIT:
Forget it! Tried it. No results. The only thing to help it is to replace the tunner or the unit. The DVDR04 TV tunner is a cheep pice of junk! Have seen on two instances where the tunner picture was horrible or shakey. Turn it off then on. Cured it.
Also it gaing about 2 seconds per day on its internal time/date clock. So for every 15 days it gains one minute. To keep it acturate with in a minute you need to reset it every 7 days!
Just about ready to slam the DVDR04 back in the box and return it for another 220. There are just too much to over look in the DVDR04. The 100 dollar difference between the two is not that greate for what you get. The 220 even records close caption!! -
After writing tech support about false macrovision readings from my vcrs to the DVDR04, they replied that there will be a new firmware update next week that "lowers" macrovision sensitivity.
Which made me wonder if the fix was already incorporated in the HD model recent update.
And, if this fix lowers macrovision sensitivity would that make it easier to hack for no mv?
For everyone having problems playing +rw's recorded on the Ilo's on other machines, you need to follow the directions on pg 23 of the manual for editing. Basically once you name the title it becomes playable. -
How well does the ILO play pressed DVD movies? I am going to buy a new progressive scan DVD player for my HDTV and thought that I might as well get one of these. Not sure how much I'd use the recorder function, but would be nice to have. Would probably mainly use it for transfering old movies to DVD.

I just finished replacing all my Comcast R6 to R6 Quad Digital Shield Coax rated at 2300MHz 18AWG, it cost more than regular R6, but it's 8x faster. Also use AR 2050MHz 3-way and Monster 2000MHz 4-way spitters. When I use these coax cables with the Liteon 5101 cable tuner my results are very good, but when I use the digital cable to gold standard video cables the better is excellent. My liteon is dated Aug 2004.
I saw the ILO at a Wal-Mart in NH where there isn't any sales tax, so the price was $149 and that's all you pay for it. I didn't care for the remote, way to basic. I am sure the features are good to some, but since Liteon makes the unit execept for some minor changes and chipset, I still feel that the 5101 is a good deal for $139.
For all of you using the HD version of the ILO, how come you don't use your PC as a DVR using a good TV Tuner capture card. I also do that, Record from cable TV to the PC then send the video down on 100 Eithernet to the living Room 36'in TV using Media MVP. I can still save the TV programs to the HD as MPEG2 and burn it directly to DVDR or DVDRW. Don't need to just record to the HD and send it to the MVP to watch like a DVD Player.
Well that's the way I do it, don't have a lot of problems with hicups, video sync or worry about timers. I use a program called WinDVR 3 to turn the PC into 300GB DVR Server to MVP. It works! I just got the Liteon 5101 to see what all the talk was.
I still say the Liteon 5101 gives the best picture when used with R6 Quad Digital Coax. Also the this model has stereo tuner.
-
There are differences between the 5101 and the DVDR04. With help from Xyscaling. Did a split screen comparason in another thread. The iLO pictures runs lighter than the 5101 and the 220. Only SVideo was uses and not the tunner.
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=242351
From reading threads on this site. It looks like most Liteon have mono tuners. The best way to test. Is to feed it a known stereo signal that pumps out left or right channel only. I grabed a Stereo modulator from RS and confirmed to my self the R04 is mono. Deffently the 220 is stereo. Cant say on the 5101. One simple test. Is you should see a menu item for Stereo/Mono/SAP some where in the mamual and menu structure.
What get me is feeding both units with high quality cable and using high grade ballanced monster spliter. Or even standard grade cable and same spliter. The 220 is solid both times. While the iLO is all over the map. If the R04 did not have the new video processing that cleans up about 90% of the junk from the tunner. It would clog the return pipeline to Wally's world. I expect that the envelope of signal reception to be abble to accept while adding little to degrade the signal it received. But when the tunner generates it own problems I draw the line at that point. It a poor or cheep designed.
If all you want is a dirt cheep DVR disk recorder. That you are not expecting the world from. Its ok. It trully entry level and does work to a point. But it does have limitations and problems. Some can be showstoppers to some people. But by the time you start hacking and adding thing to get past some of these problems. It may be worth it to look at a better unit. If I did not have the 220 and my capture computer to compare to. I would be fine with the R04. These set top boxes offer a ease of use over a computer setup. -
I'm not sure just what people expect of the Ilo. I use my DVDR04 to capture from vcr and computer. I run the s-video through a Sima switcher.
Other than the vcr sensitivity creating false macrovision stops it works fine for me. That issue is due to be fixed.
If I want excellent copies of something I will do that on the computer. For the stereo and mono material I use the Ilo.
I don't care about archiving tv, my dvr will do that. I do care about copying older material I have on tape, or other files I have downloaded.
For that it works great.
If you are looking for a PVR using the computer try this,
http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,65762,00.html
"Plextor's ConvertX PVR is a slick little hardware box that turns a PC or a Mac into a digital video recorder, but it has a big problem.
Costing about $200, the ConvertX PVR pauses and records live TV, and automatically records favorite shows every time they air.
In fact, it does just about everything a stand-alone digital video recorder does, and something extra: Shows can easily be burned to CD or DVD. It's almost perfect except for one glaring shortcoming: If you use a set-top box, it can't change channels.
....
Video can be encoded in a variety of quality settings: MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (the high-quality format used in DVDs), MPEG-4 (good for mobile devices or laptops) or the highly compressed DivX format, which is popular with file traders."
I expected my Ilo to be used as just a stand alone dvd recorder, nothing more. I needed it for tapes and computer files. Instead of converting those files, taking about four hours for a two hour dvd, I can now burn them directly.
And for s-video in the picture looks great ( I use only hq and two hour mode).
Does anyone really want to burn something with DD 5.1 or DTS to the Ilo?
Or make a dvd to dvd copy?
I can't even comprehend those who copy television shows. Most have better quality audio than the Ilo's will reproduce.
Add to that I now have a second region free player, and it exceeds my expectations.
Many people seem enamored of all the nifty doodads on the Ilo's. But in the end they wind up overlooking that is is merely a basic dvd recorder. Nothing magic, but affordable.
It does it's job.
If anyone wants more feel free to spend the extra dollars. -

EvilWizardGlick Did you get your unit to play MPEG4?
I agree. For the money and it nitch it a decent deal.
For example I uses both units to tape election day since I had a few emergency's that poped up. Set both to 4 hour mode and basically recorded 24 hours worth. No problem in operation and they both did there jobs well.
It fits the need of a quicky record desision. -

Mainly for the stuff I treasure I buy the dvd.
I'm not interested in copying from tv, the box sets come out for what I want, so I'm not using it for that.
I just needed a stand alone recorder that picked up the slack for the computer. Something that was faster than the four + hour conversion.
I also mainly use hq or 2 hour mode ( three hour mode would be nice on a firmware upgrade).
Since the pq is vhs to begin with, I'm happy with the results.
I doubt I will ever use it as a player, unless there is some out of region thing I immediately need to watch.
It looks as if most people expect some magic pvr/dvr of the units. For $150 you get what you pay for. Don't people realize that is why other brands are so expensive? -

I just pick up some at a Wal-mart in NH today before leaving that state. My local state doesn't carry them yet? Once you start using this type of R6 Quad you'll see a big difference, but make sure you get those 24K gold plated 2GHz splitters (for digital cable and Sat) there are also 1GHz for (digital cable use but they are not 24K gold and don't have low loss chip inside) -

Tech support said it was due last week. It was not posted.
Hopefully it will be posted this week. The new firmware is supposed to "lower" the Macrovision sensitivity from vcr's.
With luck they will add a disable option.
