Hi,
I have got an SVHS Video Recorder and it has an S-Video Output and I am Wanting to plug it into my S-video Input on my Capture card for capturing.
1. Does the quality of cable matter?
2. What is the best S-video Cable you can get?
3. Is there a big difference in Picture Quality using the best quality Cable?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

1. Does the quality of cable matter?
3. Is there a big difference .......
Yes . But you most likely will see no visual difference unless you have an extreamly cheap cable with poor solder/crimp connections and very thin wire with high resistance or different resistances on the pins. I believe (correct me) that with s video the luma and chroma signals are seperated . Therefore a poor connection on one of these will result in a degraded signal.
2. What is the best S-video Cable you can get?
I use a $20 cable with gold "plated' ends I seems more than adequate.
For my home stereo i use 'monster' speaker cable . I believe this company makes s-video cables also

you can buy god cables at http://www.bettercables.com
S-video is bettereven with a cheep cable -
I saw a big improvement when capturing from old crappy tapes. Just using the cable that came with the vcr.

Go some place like BestBuy and get high-density double shielding cable like Monster Cable and don't kill you piggy bank.
As far spiderman2k1 god cables he off his roctekerr you don't need to spent that kind cash on A/V cable. -
TurboRunner,
I was just about to say NO, till I read lizzoqops's post.
I will have to test this out for myself (some day)
but, for regular VHS tapes like store bought movies, NO!
But, I've seen NO difference with many of my other S-VIDEO
tests i've ran dozens of times with various devices, ie,
DVDs, Satalete, VCDs (goldfinger) etc.
I've also tried with all my cards (-so far-):
* ATI-TV Wonder card
* ATI-Rage Fury card
* DC10+ card
* DVC I usb card
* DVC II card (returned, IMO was useless, though I had NO prob w/ AMD cpu)
* PVR usb card
* WinTV PCI card (none of them has S-VIDEO, only RCA)
So, in answer to your question, based on my experience - NO!!
I'll tell you what happens when you switch cards while trying to
find the best capture. When you switch to (in my experience) another
plug, ie, S-VIDEO, you video signal goes through a color change and
all your colors have to be re-adjusted again. At first, you'll be fooled
into thinking that, Oh, I looks better. But in actuality, you colors just
got a little dissjointed. That all!! Wake up and smell the coffee!
Beside separating the Luma and Chroma, that's about all it does.
Can you really be honest with yourself?
Oh, and yes, I have tried cheap cable and Gold plated cables.
Still no difference between those cable and RCA phono cables.
But, I'll be do some test on lizzoqops's experience.
Good afternoon!
