In WIN DV what should be the setting in the EVERY N-th frame box, its usually set to 1 what does this setting do ?

furthermore what does ticking the small box do, i have just checked it and got a better quality freeze frame ???????????

The Every N-th Frame box should normally be set to 1. You would only change this if you only wanted to capture every other frame, or every 10th frame, etc.
If the small box you are referring to is between the Config and Capture buttons, selecting it allows WinDV to control your camcorder. I don't think it will change the freeze frame quality.
I really like WinDV, but I wish it came with a manual or help file. However, there is an interactive screenshot on the WinDV homepage that you can use to help to figure out what the options do. Don't feel bad if you missed it though, I went to the site a couple times looking for some instructions before I realized that it was interactive. It would be nice if they mentioned it in the accompanying text file, or just included the web page in the download.
