I'm a complete newbie, and although I've searched the forum(s) I can't seem to find the answer to how a convert program (No1 Video Converter/TMPGEnc or any other) knows which codec to use - assuming there are several installed. Is there a way a particular codec can be 'hand picked' ?

"can be 'hand picked' ?"
not really for decoding ..
they are picked by their header or 4CC info"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Thank you BJ_M - but if there are several codecs installed, is there an order of preference or is the first one used?
