  1. Hi.

I'm trying to join two .avi files with different bitrates, which I gather is not possible.

I therefore want to re-encode the files to a constant bitrate so that I can then join them.

    Is this possible?

How do I do it? I can't find anything that tells me how to encode an avi to a precise bitrate. (I've been using VirtualDub & Divx 5.11)

Any pointers would be very appreciated. Thanks.

VirtualDUB will accept different bitrates but not different Frame Rates. Are you refering to Frames per sec?
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. No

The files I have are two halves of the same movie. Looking at the file info in virtualdub tells me the bitrates are different. When I attempt to join them, virtualdub doesn't want to know. If memory serves (I can't check, I'm at work ) I just end up with a copy of the first half of the movie).

I have successfully used Virtualdub to join files in the past, but they were (according to virtualdub) the same bitrate.

Everything I have read so far tells me that two files with a different bitrate cannot be joined. If you can tell me how I can achieve this, I'd be very grateful.

It shouldn't matter what the bitrate is. A single avi can be encoded in VBR (variable bitrate) for that matter. Are you sure Vdub is reporting that the video bitrate is different and not the audio? Even that would still be possible but I could see how that could cause problems.

Just to be sure, you should simply load the first avi, hit append video segment and then load the second one. Ensure that both the audio and video tabs are set to direct stream copy. Then save out a new avi.

If it still doesn't work then try using a different version of Vdub.
