  1. When I resize with VirtualDub, it has a "Nearest Neighbor" selection that is set as the default. Should I change this? I've heard of bicubic resizing and linear resizing, but I don't know what these things really mean.

    Hello,

I've used dvdx which has a similar setting. I believe this keeps the 16x9 widescreen aspect ratio the same as the source. I'm not 100% sure though.

  3. So what about the other Filter Modes: Bicubic, Bilinear, Precise Bilinear, Precise Bicubic (A=0.75); (A=0.60); (A=1.00), and Lanczos3. What do these mean, and how and when should you use them.

they are all types of resizing algorithms - there are many more.

Nearest Neighbor is about the lowest quality, and is the lowest quality in vdub options

for downsizing - try bicubic or lanczos

for upsizing use lanczos.. which is one of the best resizing methods - vdubs lancczos filter is extremely good , better than photoshop (which uses bicubic or photoshop cs (which uses Bicubic Smooth)) ..

it takes longer as you use a better algorithm though -- though i hardly notice much difference ..

for upsizing you should not go more than 10-15% at a time and keep repeating -- you can stack these filters in vdub.

you may have to use a sharpen or unsharpen mask/filter on the results - often going just a touch to much , then using a very tiny amount of blur (i dont think you can do this in vdub though, vdubs blur is to strong, but a 2d cleaner may be used sparingly perhaps) ..

    Hello,

Sorry can't help with those. I just stick to the original source aspect ratio whenever I fool around with it.
