My method of conversion consist first of converting the avi to a vcd using tmpgenc then using dvd author to convert it to a dvd. I'd then burn it on a dvd+r. I have several dvd player at my house and some would play and other would not. is it my disc? how could i make a dvd that will play in any player?

the reason i do this is b/c most of my avi files have 2 part. i do not want to burn it on 2 disc if i can fit them in 1.

It's the player/players. Changing media or using a slower burn rate may help.

As mentioned, it seems a bit strange that you wouldn't just convert each AVI to MPEG-2 then let TMPGEnc DVD Author join the files for you ?
I would think you would end up with a better quality output and it should cut down the time considerably because you are doing one less conversion. If in doubt, Google it. -

When you burn a DVD, the format doesn't change. If you put in a -r, you'll end up with a -r and vice versa. Many newer players can read both -r and +r formats although not equally well. Look to the left under DVD Players and check the compatibility of your DVD players.
Other possiblities: the burning software you used and the firmware on your burners
