  1. I know there is a forum on doom9 strictly related to Dvd-rb, however, i've been waiting to get authorization to post, and the board owner has yet to issue me my activation.

    So, here's my question:

In CCE Custom settings, what are the optimal settings for VBR_BIAS, and Qaulity_Prec? I have mine set at 25 and 16, respectively. Is there a better setting? My VBR_Pass is set at 6 ( I prefer more passes ).

Also, one thing that struck my eye as odd was when I completed backing up a dvd, the original movie was 88% in quality when DVD-RB was completed. Now, if I were to do shrink the video using Dvdshrink, it would state that I could compress the movie to 95% of the original. I don't get it, why wouldn't DVD-RB have a higher quality rate in the end, than oppose to dvdshrink? Because techincally it is a superior program.

    Thanks!

If you look at the output target size, DVD-RB has a smaller target than DVD Shrink by default. This is possibly to account for poorer disk media, which can have issues burning near the outer edge. This would account for some of this difference, although it should be closer to 1-2%, not the almost 10% difference you are seeing.

I am curious - can you really dicern a difference between 3 passes (equating to 2-pass VBR in other systems), and 6 passes ? I am fussy about my output as well, but I have not seen a difference between 3 passes in DVD-RB and higher numbers that justifies the time required to achieve it, and in most cases, no difference at all.

  3. How do I set the settings so that I can burn a little further than normal?
My media is TY, I am not worried.

    Thanks!

How do I set the settings so that I can burn a little further than normal?
First: Read the Sticky threads at the top of Doom9's RB forum. Specifically there is one about Settings where you can find the "Hidden Settings".
In it it explain the "Target_sectors" comand

Also, one thing that struck my eye as odd was when I completed backing up a dvd, the original movie was 88% in quality when DVD-RB was completed. When you compare apples with apples, all programs will show the same compression: If you have a source that it is 7000 MB, including 500 MB de audio, and you want it to fit a DVD5 (4464 MB in Shrink), you have always to compress the source video to 61% on average = (target size-audio)/source size-audio) = (4464-500)/(7000-500)=0.61 (audio is not ussually compressed)

So, the resulting ratio should be always the same, right? NO.

It happens different programs let you chose (or force you) to compress different parts at different ratios. Some differences between Shrink and RB:
    - Shrink allows you to apply different compression ratios for each title (menus, main movie, extras)
    - Shrink has a Re-Authoring mode that allows a "movie only" backup, allowing more room for the movie and so increasing the compression ratio
    - RB does not compress Menus al all, so reducing the space for the movie a --> lower compression rate
    - RB allows options as "Half D1 & Half" and "Steal space from extras" that reduce the bitrate of the extras (lower compression rate), allowing more space for the movie
    - RB has an add-on (RB-Opt) that allows you to manipulate bitrates and other parameters at cell by cell

Regarding you question about the best settings for CCE, depends on the source. Again, read the guides at the Stickies posts in the Doom9 forum, and test with your source. In my case, I normally use the defaults.

  5. You solved my problem.

I totally forgot that RB does NOT touch the menus, therefore, no wonder my video is smaller in % than it should be. I'll have to use shrink for the menus, leave the video uncompressed, and THEN use Dvd-RB.

    Thanks!

I encode a lot of football games using CCE. Usually half D1 @ 4200 or so VBR. I use 3 pass. I've tried more passes but I really can't see a difference. To be honest, most times I can't see a difference between 1 pass and 3 passes.
