I have tried just about everything & still can not resolve this problem. I am capturing Beta video tapes using an ATI all in wonder Radeon 8500DV. Much to my surprise I thought I would probably have probelms with the video portion as I only have a 1 GB celeron, but by using Lordsmurfs guide actually everything went very well. The video is fine, BUT the problem is the audio. I am getting crackle sounds. It kinda sounds like static. I have checked everything I can think of. I have tried different record levels, different bit rates, stereo & mono, just about every setting available. I've recorded with the ATI MMC software & Ulead Video Studio & nothing helps. A suggestion was made about the sound card, but I'm using a Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live card that should work just fine with this ATI card. In fact it came out of the same computer that was using both of these cards together.
The sound sounds fine when I record, it's only when I play it back that it sounds crackly. I thought it might just be something in my playback, but I made a DVD copy of what I had recorded & played it on my stand alone player & the crackle was there, so it's got to be recording it. By the way, the crackle is also there even if I record the TV signal, so I know it's not just the tape source. HELP!

Any chance your mic is on during recording?
Another problem I recall is trying to record at too high a volume. If you are using the line-in try not to go over 50%.

It can't be the mic as I don't even have one connected nor is it even listed in my volume controls. As far as volume goes I have tried the volume at every level from full to just about off. Im really reluctant to buy a new sound card. Other than this problem I've been perfectly satisfied with my present card, & I do quite a bit of sound recording & editing & have never had the problem that I seem to be having in recording video.

  5. I have had this problem many many times. Are you recording right into your sound card?or though your ATI card with the white and red audio inputs on the blue cable? I alway record right in my sound card, try that it may help you. I also heard that it may be your harddrive and the cable is picking it up. the "noise" that is...

  6. Hum....

    1) Is evertything pluged into the same power outlet.

    2) If you do not plug in anything in the audio input and record. Do you get popping?

    3) Can you just record audio only. No video.

If you get nothing on #2 then you may need to pop in a isolation filter. Dont worry it easy to cobble together from your local RS. If #3 and a long shot then there could be a problem with saturation of the bus. IE Video + Audio Data may exceded what your system can do.

    Added:------

One last item. Is your video capture sharing any IRQ with the Live card?

The live card is proabbly one of the best shielded audio card avaiable. Both in and output. And with a cobble together cable can input digital

Thanks for all the tips. I've been away for a couple of days & haven't had a chance to check the site. I'll try your suggestions & let you know what, if any worked. THANKS

Well, here's the latest devolpments. I did download the latest sondblaster live drivers. What a mess. All the audio worked but no audio when I recorded any video. You could hear audio fine when the tv was playing on the computer but when it was recorded no audio on playback. Not only that it was the same situation when I recorded video in Ulead Video Studio. You could hear it while recording but none on playback. I could record audio from a cassette deck & play it back but not when recording video through ATI MMC or Video Studio.
I uninstalled both ATI (everything) & Video Studio & started from scratch. I even uninstalled the new soundblaster drivers. I reinstalled everything (but not the new soundblaster drivers) & got the record sound back with the ATI MMC, BUT still no sound with Video Studio. I then moved the sound card to a different slot on the motherboard. 2 slots further away from the ATI card. No help. I still get the crackle sound. And still no playback sound with Video Studio, which is a bummer because that is my video editing program of choice. I tried bypassing the ATI input, as suggested, & plugged the sound from the VCR direct into the sound card. Still had crackle. I've tried different levels, different bit rates. Nothing seems to help. The only thing I have not been able to change is that both the ATI card & the Soundblaster share the same IRQ (#11) & I don't know how to change that.
