  1. I have been asked by my uncle, who works in a large business in Mexico, to see if I could find out if laserdisc recorders and discs have completely fallen off the face of the earth. His business used LDs before and like the fact that few people could steal them and copy them.

DVDs still aren't out of the questions for presenting videos and slideshows, but he wanted to know all possible options. Does 3M still make LD blanks? Is the hardware and support available or is most limited to machines dating back 10-15 years. Any help or personal experiences are needed.

    Hello,

You can do a net search for it but why? For under $50 USD you can buy a single layer dvd recorder for the pc. It's an excellent investment and blanks are CHEAP .

EDIT - and space is a bonus! 4.37gb is a ton (the 4.7 is one interpertation not true gigabytes - check the forum it's been discussed )
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

  3. Well I'm looking up all options for this business. My uncle liked the idea of LD because of its ease of use. I have an educational LD that is great because all you do is press next slide a new picture or video plays.

But just humor me and lets pretend that DVD is not the way to go. I have looked on the web and most things are at least 8 years old. Even ebay has only yielded 1 or 2 recorders in several months. I guess very few recorders were actualy made

I have a Sony laser disk recorder that i would sell -

pretty cheap even - even though it cost 35 grand new. Works perfect.

we still make laser disks for some of our customers that require them ..

problem is getting blanks -- VERY hard to come by as they are no longer made (i think) and some of the blanks now out there are poor quality. But you can get them.

there are few companies still making LD's -- not many and the cost is very expensive - they also (as was always was) want the source material on d-beta or beta sp properly set up for laser disk, but maybe they would be flexible.

there are certain advantages to laser disk -- like frame accuracy -- which you can ONLY get with a pioneer 7400 on dvds.

  5. Thanks BJ_M

Do you have contacts with certain stores/suppliers to obtain blanks?
