Right now I have a DVD-ROM & DVD writer(hp300n) in my PC. When I do buy a dual layer burner should I keep both dvd burners in and take out the DVD-ROM or keep DVD-ROM and take out non dual layerd dvd writer? Not enough for all there in my HP Pavilion 7955 computer....

  2. Keep both writers in case one breaks down.

Writers are just as quick at ripping etc. aren't they?

Some are, some aren't. Some burners, as well as some DVD-ROMs are locked with a rip speed of around 2x. I'd say keep both burners, but see if you can find a firmware with ripping unlocked. On the other hand, you can also keep the DVD-ROM and get an inexpensive external USB2/Firewire enclosure. That way you can use it with multiple computers. You can find them online for less than $50, maybe even less than $40. There have been other threads in this forum about those enclosures.

  5. Another possible advantage to keeping both burners is that if you get stuck with some dvd's that won't burn well on the new burner (seem to happen to some of us if you are they type to try several diffrent disk depending on what is on sale really cheap), perhaps they will burn beter on the other burner.

All good suggestions / opinions Denvers Dawgs. My belief is that if you run some rip timings (even with DVD DeCrypter) you will find the ROM faster than the older burner. IF that's the case, I would keep the ROM and sell or keep the spare burner as a backup.
