    Hi efiste2,

A little more info is required:

    1. What do you capture to? Presumably AVI? Resolution? Software used?

    2. When converting using TMPGEnc, what settings do you use:
    a) Resolution?
    b) Bitrate? CBR or VBR (max, avg & min?)
    c) What setting for "Motion search precision"?
    d) What GOP structure (I, P & B frames - how many of each in what arrangement)?

    3. What software have you reinstalled?

    in tmpgnc settings follows

    a 720 x 576
b i use a 2 pass vbr with average bitrate equating to just under 6000
c i ususally use the good quality setting (slow) setting
d dont know what this is the wizard sets this and i dont alter anything im not sure of

i have reinstalled all the software due to a PC reboot!!

    Hi efiste2,

In principle, all looks OK to me (though, I'm no expert and may be missing something). A few more questions to pin things down a bit more:

    1. Use either AIVCodec or GSpot on your captured DV AVI file to get the resolution - I'm guessing it'll be 720 x 576. But, just to be sure.

    2. Your average is around 6,000. What's your max and min?

Try encoding at half-D1 (352 x 576) with min = 1000, avg = 3000 and max = 5000. These are rough figures - do a search in the forums for "VHS to DVD" - there's loads of info in there from experienced VHS capture artists on more precise 2-Pass VBR settings. If you get stuck, let me know and I'll dig out some I've seen before.

I wouldn't go that far, but no problem.

    Hope it works for you.
