  1. I am trying to catpure few small clip from a DVD movie. I would like the final format to be AVI, so I can use it in a power Point presentation. Is there any tools that will allow DVD video capture during movie playback? or do I need to convert the entire DVD to something like Dvix then do past capture later? What tools do I need to use ? Any feedback would be greatly appreicated

Ripping your DVD to your HD would be wiser vs. Capturing it (which would
    require a capture card)

For small scenes in question, I find it easiest to just:

    * pop in the dvd
    * hit play
    * skip (usually pressing the >> button) to the scene you recall, and then
    ... note the chapter

    Then..

You just rip this chapter to your hd, and proceed to encode it to MPEG, or to
your AVI, for your Poiwerpoint presentation. I've done this before, so I know
it can be done. (play .AVI files inside an PP presentation)

Note, the AVI will probably be too large for your PPP, so I would probably
try MPEG clip (by converting the ripped VOB files (from your rip) and encode
it to an MPEG that PP will read and play. You'll probably need to make sure
you have an MPEG (MPEG-1 and/or MPEG-2) codec installed on your pc.
In addition, any pc that will be playing your PPP, you'll also need to make
sure THEY these codecs installed as well. Now, only way to know for sure,
is to just jump in and test test test.

    * smartripper is one dvd ripping software application example

There are many more others to choose from, but this is my favoriate !!

Next, look at the many guides to your left, by clicking on the Guides button,
    noted in Green.

    Good luck,

  4. Is there a simple way to encode a .vob to an .mpeg file? I'm very comfortable with TMPGenc Plus, but it doesn't seem to recognize .vob files.

Use DVD2AVI to create a project file then import into TMPGEnc.[/quote]

Using DivX or XviD for AVIs, you'll get a much smaller filesize than MPEG-1/2, all things being equal.

I would try my guide here. All it needs is a couple of cropping points in virtualdub and this will do the job.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm getting the .d2v file, but I'm also getting an .ac3 file instead of an .mpa file. TMPGenc Plus doesn't recognize the .ac3 file. What might I be doing wrong?

Not sure if this will work for you but this is what I do for caturing movie images..

I use PowerDVD movie player and when I watch a movie on it, there's a button that says "Capture" and it captures any image from the DVD and saves the image in a folder on my PC.

Ok, thanks for the help on this topic--I have followed the guides and reviewed the forums extensively but I just can't seem to get subtitles to appear on VirtualDubMod. This is the only thing hindering my capturing of the clip. I have installed the plugins to read subtitles, but everytime I attempt to apply the filter there are no subtitle files to open.

I have repeated the Smartripper step, and when I rip there is a ticbox for English Subtitles (I am ripping a scene from the Criterion Collection DVD Tokyo Story); however, I can't seem to extract or have them play when I am converting to an AVI file. My ultimate goal is to insert the file into a PowerPoint Presentation. My presentation is tomorrow and if I can just get this inserted with the subtitles I will rest easier.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can offer assistance...and yes, I am a newbie.

Thanks for the link, while it does address some of my concerns when embedding the video file it still does not address my primary concern of capturing a clip with embedded subtitles. I've been tinkering with it for the last couple of hours will no luck still.

I'm not much of a subtitle person. ok

Wanting a small portion of a DVD in AVI format with subs I would probably rip the entire dvd to the hdd with dvd decrypter. Run DVD Shrink, switch to Reauthor mode, and drag in the main movie, set the in-out points exactly where I wanted the cuts to be then backup the needed portion using 'no compression'. You will have the opportunity to include the audio tracks you want and also the subs you want (if any).

This will give you a folder containing yet another vob, but this vob will be the video segment you want, with subs included I believe. It will play just fine with a player like Media Player Classic, but it is still MPEG2 format with AC-3 audio (probably), and subs, but still in a vob container.

The easiest method then would probably be to use a program like AutoGK (auto gordian knot), but I don't know. It depends on what you want or need to do.

Converting a vob to avi in virtualdubmod or virtualdubmpeg2 is easy. Download the codec you want to use, select it for compression, then save as avi. Of course there is a lot more that can be done, but how do I explain everything here.

    Good luck.
