I am a bit confused after reading some of the posts in this forum
I want to be able to record some shows from direct tv without getting a dvr from direct tv . Do the standalones record from the reciever just like a vcr. My vcr records fine. or does direct tv have some kind of signal block that prohibits a standalone recorder. I only have basic service no premium channels and don't consider paying $5.00 per month extra and $100 for a dvr worth it when I can only watch it in the one room the dvr is in. where is I have 3 other rooms with tv's and DVD players. the recorders seem to be cheap now and rewriteable discs are more convient than using a vcr and tapes

Yes they will record.
For best picture run a s-video cable from the output on DirectTV box to the s-video in of DVD recorder box.
