  1. I have an NEC ND-2510a writer in an external Plumax enclosure (with Prolific chipset). I cannot burn a DVD. It will read and write on CD-RW and CD-R, it will play commercial DVDs. When I put in a blank DVD-R the name in explorer changes to CD-drive and trying to copying files it asks to insert a disc. Checking properties>settings is shows a blank DVD-R under media type. I have tried burning with my video software (Studio 8 and Sony DVD Architect) and both hang the program when the disc is put in the writer.

Is this about disc compatibility or something else? I have Ridata and Newegg blanks.

  2. I have been using a liteon 851s for a while now. I recently changed to vsob firmware (hacked firmware that makes it run as a 832s allowing dual layer burning) and had the same issue. I seriouslly doubt that it is the media (all the same media that worked before did this to me after the firmware change). I haven't completly solved the problem but I found that the firmware upgrade caused nero setting to change (it wouldn't work). The writer of the hacked firmware said that that sometimes happened for unknown reasons. He sugested reinstalling nero and or windows. I was able to get nero working again by changing setting.
My best guess is that windows is not recognizing the drive properlly (like I said, I havent fully fixed the problem yet but I can burn). I would consider updating drivers and or try uninstalling and reinstalling the drive in device manager. Perhaps updating windows might help too as windows update sometimes has hardware compatibility fixes. (I haven't tried that yet as that computer is not conected to the internet right now though).
Since a firmware change caused the problem for me, perhaps changing the firmware could fix it for you.
Anybody else have any clue what exactlly causes this?
