Joking aside this is getting pretty serious. Currently the predictions for where I live are for anywhere from minor to major flooding. The flood crest predictions are going up every hour.
From my front porch... See the stop sign, this is where the water got to in 96 which is the current prediction. A few more feet higher and it's going in my basement. The first floor of the house sits about 5 or 6 feet higher than the stop sign. Not very visible but the river is right behind those trees at the end of the road.
Right next to the stop sign.
From the bank...

A little perspective on the situation.
This picture was taken 1hour and 15 minutes ago. 11 A.M. EST
This one 10 minutes ago.
Edit: that's about 2 or 3 feet up. -
I deal with emergencies such as flooding on a fairly regular basis. A few tips that you may already be aware of:
Move all easily damaged items to higher locations.
Check with the local authorities for the availability of sandbags. The National Guard or the city or county will usually have them stockpiled at strategic locations.
Get your emergency supplies early. Extra drinking water, flashlights, lanterns, battery powered radio, food, etc.
Stay out of rapidly moving water.
Check your insurance policies to see what is covered for damages.
Monitor the radio, TV for latest predictions, news.
Etc.
We get major flooding around here about every 10-15 years. The biggest problem is the mud left over after the water goes down. Gets in everything.
Good luck and stay dry. -
Thanks for the tips Red, I've lived next to the river my entire life so I'm aware of the possibilities and what I need to do. If the current prediction is right I'm going to be fine. The trouble is that the predictions above where I'm at keep going up.....

Still very iffy, the water is up to the fire Hydrant.... The rate at which it was going up has slowed. Cresting somtime between 2 A.M. and 6 A.M. My street is like a zoo....

Is that the Susquehanna?
I live 10 minutes from it near Harrisburg, on the east shore side.
They are calling for flood stage tonight (Sat) at 11pm - they began evacuating Shipoke just a bit ago.
They are saying that crest will hit 2 - 3 am on Monday. 23-25 feet. River is normally 5-9 feet on a normal day.
Be careful, coalman. Living by the river most of your life - I'm certain you know what to do.
My 70 year old neighbor woke me this morning at 6am - she had 6 inches of water in her basement and thought the sump pump failed.... I donned my wet gear and checked it out - seems her pump was fine, it was just overwhelmed by the 8 inches of rain we got last night. Rain stoped at 9am, and her pump caught up to the water at noon. -
All is well, it made it to the big tree on the right in the first photo. The fireplug was half covered. Now I only need to get the all shit off my front porch back into the cellar. First level of the house was well above what they were predicting.

We were standing there watching it creep up the bank, never saw anything like it. 3 or 4 more hours of rain like that and I probably would have been pumping water out of my basement as well.
My only concern now is that the remnants of another hurricane doesn't come through again. One of the reasons this last storm was so bad is because the river was still very high from last week when Charley came thru. It really hasn't gone down at all this summer.
Ohhhh and go Penquins.... the local ones, not pittsburgh. -
Good to hear you're ok....
I didn't see your fathers trailer, they were actually ticketing and arresting people in the Harrisburg area for being near the river if they didn't live there. I'm a few miles inland from it, so I didn't bother with going to check it out because of the fines.
Wilkes-Barre? I should have figured when you said two things - 35 feet in river height and "go Penquins"....
Of course, the name 'thecoalman' is pretty much a dead give away too.
Should be a pretty good year for hockey in the A.... lots of young talent back down from the parent clubs.... We'll be seeing you in WB a few times this year. The division should be pretty interesting.
(but we're still going to beat you guys like a dirty rug! ) -
thecoalman:
The following was borrowed from a web page:
Genesis 6:15 in the Bible tells us the Ark's dimensions were at least 135 meters long (300 cubits), 22.5 meters wide (50 cubits), and 13.5 meters high (30 cubits). That's 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high! It could have been larger because several larger-sized cubits were used. But the 45-centimeter (18-inch) cubit is long enough to show the enormous size of the Ark.
Keep this on a post_it note stuck to the fridge for quick easy reference. Never know when you might need it
btw) Nice looking neighbourhood. -
