The easiest way I can think of is to look it up in the specs sheet on the manufacturer's web site. A quick Google search with the Manufacturer name and model number should answer your question.

Offhand, I don't know of any test you can do on the drive itself to find out how much cache it has, although there may be a way (I've never looked in to it).

Ditto the mfg. specs. That's the easiest. If you can't find the model number in Device Manager, a diagnostic app like Sandra might show it.

  4. make sure you get the model correct/complete

I replaced my old 40gb harddrive witha Western digital WD120JB w/8m buffer. couple weeks later a friend decided to do the same, and sent me a email to say he got a better deal($12.00 less than i spent). his drive is a WD120BB w/2m.

although i gave him the exact model and a link to the vendor i bought from, he went to pricewatch and only looked at capacity, and price. his drive works fine, but the JB vs BB is a hefty buffer size difference.

and Sandra will show you as well.
Be satisfied, the day is yours. If i have to explain, you would'nt understand.

It goes to show you that you can lead a horse to water .......

I would have gladly paid the extra twelve bucks for the larger cache.
