I have a firewire card in my machine and three devices, a Canopus ADVC-100, a Sony DV Camcorder and an external DVD-RW.
I can't seem to run/swicth on the DVD-RW the same time as the ADVC-100 is connected, is this normal?
If this is normal, is there a fix or is it possible to install a second firewire card (seems a waste to have three connections on a card but only one can be used at any one time).
I must confess I haven't really played around with all three devices at once, but know I have to turn off the ADVC-100 to use the DVD-RW.

Have you tried different Firewire sockets for the different devices? I've got a three port Firewire card (TI chipset) and only two of the ports will talk to a DV camcorder. I remember reading somewhere (on here probably) that some ports will work with external drives, others will work with camcorders but not all will work with everything. -

Depending on the chipset in the external burner you may want to chain the ADVC through the second port on that. I am limited to two 1394a ports on the new system and run my ADVC through the burners. I don't even need the burner power turned on for the system to recognize it. I'm using enclosures with the Oxford chipset. I've also had it plugged into the front port with 2 burners out the back port and it's recognized them all. I wonder if they are trying for the same SCSI ID or something?
One thing the Dazzle POS had over the Canopus was it had two 6-pin 1394a ports on it so you could chain through it. The 4-pin on the Canopus may work the same but I haven't tried it. -
I haven't had your problem, but I have my ADVC-100 and an external Firwire HD plugged into my computer and I have never seen any conflicts. However, I have no idea how the MB Firewire assigns addresses to the external units.
I'm wondering if the OS is the one having the problem with multiple devices. Firewire should be able to communicate with a lot of devices at once. Not sure how many, but a lot more than 3.
BTW, Firewire 6 connector includes power for devices, Firewire 4 does not, that's the difference between the connector pin count. -
Thanks folks, I'll do some playing
