XP sp2 won't keep the windows firewall running after I restart my computer. I already am using Zonealarm and hooked up to a router. Maybe that's why. Also, I ordered some shoes from K-Swiss's website and when fininshed they said they logged my IP address. It looked like my real IP address but I thought running my computer through a router masked my IP address so nobody could obtain the real IP address am I wrong here?

  2. SP2 will not run 2 software firewalls, and one will be disabled. as to you IP address being logged, was it your routers IP, or your system on your network?

you do not want to use 2 software firewalls. as to your router, you may want to look over settings within it, and see if there has been any changes, or problems. if there is a problem, you can look to the manufacturer's site for known problems, and fixes.
Be satisfied, the day is yours. If i have to explain, you would'nt understand.

    Just use zonealarm.

    The windows firewall is anemic.

Ok, thanks I will just keep one software firewall running. As for my IP being logged, it wasn't the IP my router is putting out so I am inclined to think it was my true IP address. I went into network settings and the router's IP address is the one listed so I know nothing has changed.

The ip address is the address of your router.

    The computers use different addresses.

    For example 192.168.15.30

No. SP2 allows for multiple software firewalls. Not all
current firewalls will co-run however. Sygate works
    fine.

But the question is Why would you want to run 2 software firewalls?

They would just fight each other for control.

  8. bazooka,

I'm surprised you have not come across this during
network security. Multiple fire walled systems are designed
to react to different levels of threat. As a simple example, I
use PeerGuardian to protect against known commercial
abusers of tcp/ip traffic, pest patrol corporate against active-x and
militant script, sygate for general i/o protection, XP SP2 for o/s
and a private firmware/software countermeasure TSR that I'm testing.

ZoneAlarm with VPN and a router alone can't protect open ports. If you have any open
ports to the net, or even a public lan/wan, you should not rely
on the o/s to protect itself - this is what you are doing if you are
    running just ZoneAlarm.

Normally I would agree with you, but I recommend a hardware firewall plus a software firewall, not two software firewalls.

  10. private firmware/software countermeasure
That is my hardware firewall - just uses a TSR to connect, not a background service.

I agree with you - most people just need a VPN router setup and
a software firewall. I'm worried about keyloggers and RT's
which is why I go the extra mile.

PS: PeerGardian is worth looking at if you are doing p2p and
    don't want to be ID'd.
