I'm not sure if anyone else feels the same way about the whole EP4-6 DVD box set. Which version is 'better' isn't really an issue for me. I've seen both and I can't say that I got anything extra out of the SE versions, nor can I say that the changes totally ruined the movies for me. It had been so long since I'd seen the originals that there's nothing I could really pinpoint except some of the more obvious CG 'enhancements'. I also agree that since GL directed the originals and basically owns the rights to just about everything to do with them, he's the one who should have final say so about what is released and what isn't.
That said...what disappoints me about the whole situation is that I can envision George Lucas standing on his balcony shouting down to all the fans who'd gladly pay for the Originals on DVD
'I'M GEORGE ******* LUCAS!!!'
...doing his best impression of Orson Welles in Citizen Kane.
I have respect for his 'artisitic vision.' But I don't have much respect for him telling those who PERFER and are willing to PAY MONEY FOR the original versions that they've watched and loved, the versions that financed his vast 'Empire' to basically GO F**K THEMSELVES if they want those same versions on DVD. It's not an issue of cost. Although people give the argument that Lucas has a ton of money and has no need or desire to make money off the Original versions on DVD, I look at Bill Gates and notice that M$ is still selling software left and right.
I'm sure it won't break him, but he won't be getting my money for the SE DVDs. I'll wait for the originals on DVD. I honestly don't think he can resist.

In 1995 we had the Trilogy on VHS and LD, announcing this would be the last chance to own the Original Trilogy, and so far he has stuck to it, and i believe he will keep to it.
Anyone waiting for the Originals, i wouldn't hold your breath, why do you think the orginal master is damaged, it was probably discarded as never to be used again..
I personally am looking forward to next week so i can get through them again, in a nice Anamorphic 5.1 transfer, while you can look at your 10 year old VHS, while insisting its so much better.

Welcome to real life and quit complaining about a movie.
It is only a movie.
It did not make you walk on water. -
On second thought maybe I have misjudged you. You obviously sound like a filmaker yourself. Where might I be able to see your work? After all I'd love to see the work of a man that can call Lucas an inept filmaker.

I'm not against the discussion of this subject but it's amazing to see how some people act. It's not this subject in general but it's the pronciple and the bottom line is he's messed with the originals that made him millions in the first place. The vast majority gained their memories from the original. Accept the fact and move on people but please don't keep repeating it sounding like a scratched record saying that this subject should be ignored
how many things do you know have been messed up by modifying the originals compared to actually being improved? Here in the UK they just released the Chopper (do you like the link to Star Wars?) after 15 years or something again (a kids bike) and they have taken away what I remember most and that is the huge central gearstick!
this is the new bike without the stick probably removed due to safety reasons. The original bikes in excellent condition can fetch Ł800 on Ebay and the new ones are Ł300 in shops but some idiots are paying more than that already on Ebay
now I wonder why that saying of 'don't try to fix it if it ain't broke came around?'
the same can be said for cover songs also. Very few surpass the original versions and it's all down to individual preferences again
now if people can realise this but even better, accept this then things would be so much nicer but that's never the case. Some just seem to be very narrowminded and do not accepts others opinions and like to make their feelings known over and over and over again until someone snaps :P
who wants to take a bet these will eventually be released one day anyway when they have milked the franchise? We seen it all before in everything such as bands reforming even though they said for years and years they wouldn't
Wasn't E.T. another one that was never going to be released or was it just an intended long delay of a few years?. I see the US version also had the original on the 20th Anniversary DVD release, so it shows that Speilberg hasn't got his own head up his ass and realizes what 'original' means to most people who enjoyed the film the first time around
another great post

But last night I watched most of episode IV again and realized that the added effects just don't fit episode IV very well. The enhancements to episode V were pretty good, but episode IV just doesn't have the continuity it had once before. Also, it seems as though they changed the soundtrack a bit. I don't remember the music being so prevalent in the first scenes of the original release (even the 1997 release). This is one case where I would have to agree with the Star Wars purests. I would have been happy to see them re-released with the special effects cleaned up (the brownish orange light underneath Luke's speeder).
Otherwise, I'm a huge fan of director's cuts. -
for those who care, eventhough I know this is not allowed to say on this forum. But the orriginals are circulating around out there on dvd, ripped from the Laser disc releases, I personally bought one of those on a flea marked, and eventhough the quality isnt amazing, then it's still pretty good.
Ofcause this is far from a full worked/reworked dvd release but those who badly badly want it can prolly get it from more... less honest sources
now go geek somewhere else -
you ain't really allowed to mention it as it's advocating warez

I have a feeling you are just coming back for more. Don't you know can unsubscribe from a thread if it really bothers you? Moaning about other people 'moaning' in a subject you have no interest in is a lot sadder than just moaning about the lack of the original release on DVD

I get your point and it's nice to see a pleasurable reply
I agree it's up to Lucas in a way but you will always get those who are in favour of original stuff or those in favour of updating stuff. It's just the same thing I mentioned with records etc where some listeners like the newer versions but others don't. It will always be the same no matter what
what's that saying again?, you can please some of the people some of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time
moaning about people moaning about this type of subject will never make this opinion split go awaybut as long as you ain't trying to stir things up like earlier in this thread then I'm cool 8). Can you honestly believe they will never be released?
p.s. and I ain't the forum policebut more the forum etiquette vigilante

There is far too much moaning in this thread given the total lack of female participation to this point.

SW enthusiasts VALUE everything related to SW. Including the original movies. The VCRs and LDs players are coming to end of life. Ordinary folks may (not) know how do backups to VCD or DVD.
There is always hope that the Original will be in DVD.
DVD Pirates say, Thanks GL for not releasing the Original... -

Oh and to keep it on subject. I honestly think the originals will be released on DVD or maybe HD-DVD. Even if Lucas has to die first, and his money grubbing kids decide to stab him in the back.
Alright, that's a bit extreme. But I'd bet a little money that they will be released someday. Until then, I'll enjoy my special editions, and I do have the VHS if I really need it. -
Unless Lucas changes his mind, which he won't, you'll have to wait at least 75 years after he dies before anyone can release the originals. His wife or kids would have no right to the movies unless he assigned his copyright to them. They are definitely never coming out.

The important question is will somebody release a Star Trek Special Edition where:
- Star Trek 1 is only 90 minutes long, but tells the same story
- Star Trek 2 is allowed to remain cool, but someone does a voiceover to "tone down" the infamous KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!! line
- Star Trek 3 comes up with a better loophole for Spock.
- Star Trek 4 allows William Shatner and crew to enjoy a feast of several endangered species after saving the whales which ironically results in Earth's destruction, regardless.
- Star Trek 6 can be renamed Star Trek 5 and Star Trek 5 can be released as a "RENEGADE VERSION" similar to Highlander 2, except that it's laughed at more."What? Huh?!? WHAT will come out no more?!?" Jack Burton -- BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA
