  1. I have a DivX .AVI file with AC3 audio, that I want to convert to a SVCD compliant MPEG. What program should I use for this?
I've tried TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress, but it complains about "Invalid sample format (error code 0x80048002)" and apparently needs a special AC3 thningy to be bought. No dice.
I also looked at The FilmMachine, but couldn't find any way to manually set the bitrate, which I need to be able to do. No dice.

I know there is a ton of programs out there that should be able to do it, but I'd like to find one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Preferably a free one.

Any advice on the matter would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  3. Not an expert but I think you need to BUY the special AC3 thningy plug-in to decode AC3 sound with TMPGEnc...

perhaps you can decode the audio to WAV with VirtualDub but i'm not sure.....

    Expert anyone?

You do not need to buy the ac3 plugin.

    Try headac3he.

    It is free.

    1. Download and install VirtualDub.
    2. Open your AVI file in VirtualDub (you can drag and drop, if you like).
    3. In the menu at the top, click "Audio" and make sure there is a DOT) next to "Source Audio" and "Full Processing Mode."
    4. Then click Audio > Compression. In the box that pops up, make sure the option selected is "<No Compression (PCM)>" (it's the first option at the top). Click Ok.
    5. Then go File > Save WAV. Give your file a name, pick a location to save, and click Save.

You'll know you've done it right because the file you get will be VERY large.

Download the TMPGEnc Plus trial version (screw XPress). You'll need that for making MPEG-2 video required for SVCD. You can make MPEG-2 free for 30 days, and you can buy it for about 25 or 30 bucks.

Plug your wave file in as your audio source, your AVI as your video source. Use the templates. Read some guides. TMPGEnc is pretty easy.
