and back to the regularly scheduled program...
if you have Partition magic 8.1 (get the free update 8.0 to 8.1 from Powerquest (now owned by symantec--eek!). 8.1 supports the changes to NTFS that XP uses.
now with P-Magic 8.1 you can manipulate your partitions, make smaller, bigger, create new, copy, change cluster sizes, and of course drive letter assignments WITH OUT losing your data. since you will be doing this via DOS, windoze will not prevent you like disk management.
a DOS boot disk can be made in windoze, but you can make a custom floppy or create a image to make a bootable CD with the files to manipulate your partitions.
i have used PM since v3, and 8.1 on the system i am on right now with 1 WD120 and Maxtor 80 x2 (RAID0)
WD120 c:=Boot 18gb primary partition/active d:apps=logical 100gb
RAID0 e:= Otro single 156gb partition for storing ISO/mpg/avi/mp3 and audio data for multitrack recording....
C is only used for OS and some docs. all my apps/games on d: and e for files as listed above.
so the answer in short is NO DATA is lost when using partition magic, unless you delete or format a partition.

xxgriff,
If I don't have any partitions set up on my primary...
...can I create two on my 200gb HDD with partition magic (say a 150gb and a 50gb) and move my OS to the 50gb partition?
Kinda without having to re-install anything?

not ******* bad if i do say so myself.
someone once told me that if you have nothing nice to say, then keep your damn mouth shut. i was, am looking for suggestions to help me implement RAID for the first time in my life. if i am lucky enough to have some spending money to experiment, isn't that what it is all about??? xxgriff helped me a great deal, and i am very thankfuf for that.
if this thread does not interest you, then stop watching it and posting on it as all you have done is been a negative source for info.
let those of us that want to play and experiment do so in peace.
go bother someone else.   [/quote
i know how to rescue my data and OS-------that is not the issue. i will also figure out my drive letter problems---not a big issue.
do you need any help in recovering any data or an OS??? -
will hay, you most definetly can create a second partition and not loose anything. i have done that many times before with partition magic 8. i am gonna do what xxgriff said and get the update to 8.1 so i can play around in DOS and not loose anything. let me know if this works for you. partition magic is a real friendly easy to use progam!!!!
