Usually the A0 means retail and XL means the version with the "unique hardware features, such as a resonance-absorbing suspension that stabilizes the servo system" Also different firmware from the regular 108.
Still a few bugs in the system... -
I have a 108 and it seems a lot quieter than my 107D was...

do yall think the $100 price difference b/t the 2 is worth gettin the A08? The only reason i want the A08 is b/c the front looks better w/ the shiny metal button
I will not be using any of the softwares that comes w/ it so shuld i get stick w/ the 108?

I think you have answered your own question already. $100 for a button? That's the same as 300 DVD discs.

The A08XL is quiter and has less vibration than the 108. The A08XL is also a retail box version and comes with some software that the 108 doesn't. Also, depending on the computer you're putting the drive in, the A08XL MAY NOT FIT because the tray is the full width of the drive. This has been known to cause an issue in some name brand computers like DELL and some others. Hard to say if the cost difference makes the A08XL worth $100 more. Although I like the look of the A08XL, I'd probably opt for the 108.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
i would go for the 108....who cares about software and buttons or noise.....

If you really want to spend the extra $100, just buy ANOTHER 108. :P

I bought the 108 for $86 and it is awesome! I saw the A08 at CompUSA for $179. The front is cooler looking, but not worh the added cost in my opinion. I already have the cable and all the software I need, so I don't see paying extra for that stuff.
They say the A08 is quieter, but I can hardly imagine it is much. The 108 is already quiet enough. Yes, you can hear it if you're really listening for it, but barely. It's not like I'm going to be burning DVDs in a library or anything anyway. I used to have a TDK 12x CD burner that sounded like an airplane taking off. This one is nothing like that. It's quieter than the normal background noise, at least in my house. I can hardly imagine anyone being bothered by the noise. Again, not worth spending the extra money for this feature.
For perhaps $10 more (for the face plate), I'd go with the A08, but for double the price, I don't think it's worth it. Just my opinion, for what it's worth. -
guess i'll be goin w/ the 108...is there a way u can buy the A08 faceplate seperatly and put it on the 108? lol...what about the button?

In case you were not also aware of the difference between DVR108 & DVRA08XL, the DVRA08XL performance adjusting firmware allows you to rip at around 12x compared to the DVR-108 which is locked at 5x.

Why hack the firmware and void the warrnaty when the DVRA08XL already has the feature..

Of my three DVD drives, the 108 is by far the quieter of the bunch. I don't even know if it's burning (I must look at the light). So who care about the quiet drive feature of the A08XL?
