I'd probably not discuss it until we get a mod sanction, only because it could be portayed as advocating a way to beat the system
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Hello,

Oh, well like I said I'm pretty ignorant as it comes to ip/routers/java stuff. I'm much more on the user end of it. I have little practical programming expierience.

Any time you have a question, pm me.

I deal with networking on a daily basis. My major in college is network engineering and administration.

    Hello,

Bazooka - Thanks! I also have a neighboor who has since moved to DC that's into network security. I bug him about the "background questions" too. You know, stuff you might have wondered about "why does this thing do that thing when I move this?" Anyway, I do have a lot of practical pc knowledge just not a whole lot of technical knowledge. Though I do know some.

    To all:

How does IP logging/matching go for dynamic IP addresses (dialup and some broadband) ? Useless ?

If the mods think this should not be discussed in public, please PM.
With a 'typical' IP address being xxx.xxx.yyy.yyy, the xxx numbers are not likely to change, even with dynamic addressing.

Did I pass the test, bazooka?

Good idea. Limit it to PMs please. We don't want to give someone ideas and techniques

    Yep

    You have class A,B&C networks.

Class A uses the first octet.
Class B uses the first two octets
Class C uses the first three octets.

So you must determine whether you are using VLSM(variable length subnet masking or not.(VLSM is classless.)

You might have for example 192.168.xxxx.xxxx, and you have to determine what the subnet is and the first usable ip address is.

    192.168.......

It still surprises me how many companies still use that range for their internal networks...

Not to mention home networks either

All the IT techs must have remembered it from IP Adressing 101
    If in doubt, Google it.

Most low end routers use the 192.168 range as well.

What are the "sacred" internal ranges again ?

    A - 10.x.x.x

    B - 172.16.x.x-172.31.x.x

    C - 192.168.0.x-192.168.255.x

it's been a while but I've still got it ...
    If in doubt, Google it.
