I dont know about your version of Win98, but you cannot rename a file extension unless it is blank in the first place. I have to use DOS to rename file extensions usually.
Here is a quick and dirty guide to renaming in DOS should you need to.
OK, firstly cut and paste the file that you want to rename into the root directory of your C: drive (C:\ ).
This saves you having to navigate through your directories in DOS. To save more DOS headaches, rename your first part of the file (first part = up to the . of the filename) to something simple, (no more than 8 characters)
Now open a DOS prompt (Start>Programs>MS DOS Prompt).
    Type in:
    CD..
    Press enter.
The prompt should have changed from "C:\WINDOWS>" to "C:\>".
Now type (swap "filename" for the name of your WMV file):
    REN filename.WMV filename.ASF
    Press enter.
Now look at the file in Explorer and it should have been renamed. You may have to refresh the directory for it to appear (Press F5 key to refresh).
Or seeing as you are already in DOS, check this way:
    Type in:
    DIR filename.ASF
(Again swap "filename" for the name of your file) Press enter.
If you have problems, just repost.
    OR
When you try to open the file in TMPGEnc, set the "Files of Type:" field in the "Open File" window to "all files (*.*)" in the drop down menu.

    open up your C:\

go to view>folder options, click the view tab.
then UNcheck the checkbox that says "Hide file extensions for known file types".
then press ok or apply (whatever)

then when you go to your .wmv file it will have the .wmv extension on there.. from there do this..

    right click on your .wmv
    delete the .wmv part
and add .asf to the end

    thats what i do..

i think the only problem you have, is you cant see the file extensions, so just do like it says above and you should be fine.

    good luck

hehe, I am always fiddling with the options in Windows... I guess I forgot about that one.
I think that TMPGEnc will open anyway if it is set to open All files (*.*)
