I went to the thread on the doom9 site and followed a link from user Krismen. It points to a version of virtualdubmod 1.4.11.
That version allowed me to join to xvid files that virtualdubmod version 1.5.10.1 all inclusive would not let me join. Another user acknowledged that it worked with xvid also but complained of an audio problem.
    My audio was fine.
There are some nice options in that version. We need more tests to see if it works consistently.

  2. again the ugly VBR audio stream detected error. any idea on how to work around the vbr thing to join the xvid, i guess gll99 has had luck with this version of virtualdubmod

But mine was vbr audio too. There is a setting on file open when the search panel opens up, at the bottom you can check on "nandub vbr mp3 compatibility". Did you see that? When is the msg coming up for you?

  4. things seems ok then all goes back to wrong - why me?

working this process out is long - i again am suffering from a very loud and distict pop at the append point, any ideas? also, the "intro clip" is louder then the orgianl clip even though the intro clip is just a cut section from the orignal clip with direct audio and full process video for the logo filter.

since we are talking about the audio again now - in file information the audio compression is unknwon(tag 2000) i swear that when i started this great adventure it actually gave the correct information there.

  5. some more info about adio problem.

i have tried every version of vdub out there now (1.5.10 and 1.48 AC3 and nandub and virtualdubmod and mp3 freeze). to track down this audio problem i am just open full clip, audio is direct steam copy, video is ful process (matching the compression) and no filters, save as "intro clip", load intro clip and append full clip. all but 1.5.10 joined no problem - however 1.5.10 says "audio streams have different sampling rates (24000.000 vs 20001.000) this is probably where my pop is coming from. any ideas why the sampling changed? any ideas on how to fix this?

    bossmansmith:
    Let's clear this up first.
Can we now say that the xvid clip joining is no longer an issue using the special vdubmod version 1.4.1.11 that we found via the link on the doom9 forum. If yes then we can look for a way to rencode the vbr audio in the intro clip. I might have got lucky but in 2 separate "new" tests I performed on different files the audio actually phased out just before the full clip started. Maybe I picked a spot where the audio was fading already.
I'll take a look at the audio options...ie full processing mode when saving the audio clip in the first place. Didn't junkmalle or bunyip make a suggestion about that (sorry too lazy to go back and see who it was)?

PS did you turn off the audio2 option just in case its a problem.

btw) In that version of vdub you can input a separate vbr audio clip with the intro.

edited.. Sorry but I just noticed that you have now switched over to ac3 audio and no longer talking about mp3 vbr.
Man it's hard to keep up

  7. ok - i was able to get xvids with VBR to join up ok - so that is not a problem.

this is a divx file with AC3 audio not VBR.

i think i am going to go thru the entire post with different formats and try things out for an hour, then we can setup a guide for the things that we know now work and can continue to work on this audio pop problem that i get on the ac3 divx files.

  8. ok guys how dumb - i took the intro from episode 17 and appended episode 12 to it (the problem episode) and it worked with no pop noise. both were encoded exactly the same. i will work on a good tutorial guide for naming divx andxvids with screenshots and try to post it later today.

i appreciate everyones help and hope that the next time i have a bright idea it doesnt take me 3 days of google searches and 4 days of working out the info to come up with a process to achieve the goal.

maybe tommorrow we can try to automate the process to be able to title alot of clis easily.

Yes that would be good vdub does allow you to batch process. Maybe we can look at automating something with that.

Unfortunately, I also have to re-encode some previously captured files for a variety of reasons like framerate conversion and a few may have gmc or qpel because I used the xvid codec before I got the dvp-642. Still others were encoded in the wrong audio format.

I am following a few related threads for that.

An interesting audio question came up in this thread:
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=235493
especially this link to the divx site:
    http://www.divx.com/divx/divxpro/guides/audio.php
I got away from vdub and vdubmod for a while so was a bit rusty but stuff like this really helps to jog the old brain cells.

You may want to look at this for the automation:
