I've been waiting all summer, and it's finally happened. The chestnut trees here in northern Japan are bearing fruitI guess it's still early in the season because all the ones I found aren't fully ripe yet. The high winds here must have blown them out of the trees. So I dropped 300 yen on a pound or so at a local store. Back in the old days, I just bit the shells off and ate them and that's what I did with 5 or 6 of them. I then decided to go high tech and try boiling them and peeling off the shells as described on a chestnut cooking website. I ended up with a pound of mushy chesnuts. How the hell am I supposed to do this? I cut a slice in them just as decsribed on the site so they wouldn't explode. I tried to "recover" them by baking them in the oven for a while but it didn't work either. So I am left with a bag full of soggy nuts that are barely edible and I'm out 300 yen. If someone could please explain how I should be handling my nuts, I'd appreciate it....

He'd throw them in the oven for a while, I d guess you would have to experiment on how long. I'd go with 350 degrees for about an hour. I've pretty sure he used to boil them too, I don't remember him ever splitting the shells.
Good subject line...I'm sure it's going to get a lot of views.

I've head of people stuffing turkeys with chestnuts and bread ......stuff the whole goddamn bird with your mush and lets see what happens.
Other than that I'm out of nut ideas -
I've always just roasted my nuts. I usually get a cake cooler rack and throw my nuts on it in one layer. preheat the over to 225 (farenheit). They should start popping when they are ready, but with some ovens it's hard to hear, so keep an eye on them after 15-20 min. You can nuke them for about 20-30 seconds too, but don't eat them immediatelyafter they come out of the microwave. THEY IS HOT! If you boil your nuts, don't cut a slit in them. They pop naturally, but you will want a cover to keep them from blowing in your face. As soon as they start blowing repeatedly, pour them into a strainer immediately, even if some haven't popped yet. They are cooked and may blow while they are straining.
