Ok... I didn't know what exactly to put the subject line exactly. Something is bugging the heck out of me and I can't figure out why it does this. I can use dvdshrink or dvd2one all day long when backing up my dvd's. But when I DL a complete dvd compilation, I cannot shrink it, reauthor or anything. I have a VIDEO_TS folder for example on something I just DL'd. And when running dvd shrink, I get:
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
Invalid data in file c:
and it gives the path and file name which is always a vts something.vob file.
The file is NOT invalid and it is there. The video plays fine. The files can be burned to a DVD and played in a standalone no problem. I just wanted to shrink it a little to reduce the size.
If I reauthor to have just the movie I get the same or similar error (haven't done it in awhile 'cause I got fed up).
WHAT is so different about a DL'd video than one I rip myself?

Was the downloaded movie commercial movie? Certain ones give certain problems, and this may be one of them.

DVDSHRINK will also create an image file and burn compilations, which I lump into one because the program didn't use to have those features and I'm just use to saying 'shrink it' when referring to it. So excuse me for not spending MORE time on the features of dvdshrink and what I do with it instead of just finding out why it fails on anything that I have not ripped myself. -
It sounds like the DVD you have downloaded is incomplete, or corrupt. I have just rescued a disk that had a scratch that could not be nicely removed. I used DVDxRescue (from the now defunct 321 Studios) to get as much of the disc across to my hard drive as possible. It could get all but one file, which it could only partially save.
DVD Shrink would not load the disk because this file was incomplete, however it would allow me reauthor and load the parts that were OK. I was firtunate that the corrupt file in this instance was just the studio logo first play VOB, and not part of the main disk.
Try reauthoring to see what you can save.Read my blog here.

The fact that you can play a movie in a software dvd player doesn't mean that there isn't bad data in it. Software player programs can be very forgiving by skipping over bad spots but your standalone would probably freeze on the frame. I've never had to fix a corrupted vob but have you checked the tools section. I seem to recall one called vobedit. There are probably more either here or the doom9 site if that one does not work.

Many a downloaded DVD-R compilation will not, for whatever the reason work in DVD Shrink. It is very common it seems. You just have to find a tool that will allow you to shrink it. Can't help much there as I get the same error displayed.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
It sounds like you will need to go through the steps of reauthoring it through another application. You could use an application like TMPGENC DVD Author to do this although there are a number of others that will do the same thing. you could also you ISOBUSTER to estract the mpeg2 files and then reauthor it.
Some version of dvdshrink would not allow you to reauthor certain content. (Trying to find a better way to explain this). For example, when I would take a home video that was capped on my panny, I could not get dvdshrink 3.05B to take the file and work with it. The later version did work however.
As most of the mavericks on this site know, were theres a will there is a way. -
Thanks everyone for replying. I'll look them through all this evening and make a better reply if needed (at work right now).
But basically I'm wondering how I can have an invalid file on EVERYONE that I DL. I can use imgtools and make and image then burn the image and it will play on every DVD player that I can find with no problems. I can even take that disc and try to open it with dvdshrink and it won't open.
Just is very weird. -
If DVDShrink won't open it at all then it could be a totally different problem.
I purposely captured a very large dvd to hd from tv using Neodvd to get the best DVD quality and thenfooled around with it and messed something up. The short and sweet is that Shrink wouldn't read it. As a last resort I used dvdfab (it has a tool section) and used the feature to make a new ifo. Shrink complained that it could not find vts....01 but that is because my vob files had different names so I just renamed them to what the ifo and dvdshrink wanted. When I tried again it worked and I was able to shrink my capped files. I reauthored the DVD in dvdlab to create new menus etc... afterward but at least it worked. I don't think this method will save original menus but you could make a backup copy before you try this and see if shrink will read it with the ifo created by dvdfab.

Thoughts:
1. If you downloaded it, odds are it fits on a blank without shrinking.Try using Copy2DVD or Nero.
2. Many "downloaded" films won't work with Shrink. Yes, it IS a common problem - not because of a problem with Shrink, but because the warez monkeyz that ripped and re-encoded the movie are l33t h4xx0rZ and screwed up the structure.
So the solution?
JUST BURN THEM AND STOP TRYING TO USE SHRINK ON THEM.
I know, it sounds harsh. But honestly...
