  1. This may take a bit of time, so here goes, but thank you in advance for reading this.

Firstly I am a Canopus ADVC-50 user and have had about 18 months of fairly trouble free useage out of it, with some very good stable results.

The current capture program I use it Edit Studio 3 (in XP). I really liked the control of Edit Studio 2's more simple and separte capture program, but for some reason it stopped working. I will probably go back to this when I carry out my next reformat.

A little problem has suddenly recurred. When I first got the ADVC-50, I started off using dear old Windows Movie Maker 1. I would be able to capture a film and then that would be it. The capture device would be detected, but the capture wouldn't accept an image from it and a recording in this state would cause a corrupt video file.

Switching to the Edit Studio program and reinstalling my OS with the Canopus installed seemed to solve this issue as did Windows Movie Maker 2. Then suddenly for no apparent reason (well maybe one!) it has started happening again.

    "Well maybe one..."

When some of my VHS tapes goes onto the white noise after the film, the capture is something like this (with accompanying stuttering hiss):

Last week, I inadvertantly left this running a while and since then the Canopus card has behaved in the way I described above. The last capture I carried out got stuck at the white noise point too, but previously it has just not wanted to accept anymore input after the first capture has been stopped.

    Three things really:

Was damage being caused to the Canopus card while in the white noise state? This has happened before causing no problems.

Does the ADVC-50 have a habit of over heating? The only other possible answer I can think of.

Admitedly, my PC may take a reboot to detect the Canopus card in the first place or to pull out and plug back in a couple of times the firewire plug the Canopus is attached to.

Would an ADVC-100 be a better all round capture device as it wouldn't be on with the PC constantly?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and again thanks for reading.

  3. No, I have held back from updating to SP2, as my XP machine hardly ever gets connected to the Internet.

I know there were problems with SP1 too, but when I installed that it didn't change the behaviour of the Canopus at that time.

  4. Seems I have managed to solve the problem by removing it form the PCI slot and mounting it in the front of the PC within the disc drive case.

Hope it lasts, but at least it is running again for the time being.
