    What's the purpose of AUDIO_TS?

    Is it always blank?

It's for DVD-Audio only. For a DVD video disc, it's always empty.

The AUDIO_TS folder as PChan states is for DVD AUDIO. Most dvd players are not capable of plating dvd audio, you will need a dvd audio capable player for that.

dvd audio is basically high resolution audio, 24bit/96kHz in 5.1 surround and 24bit/192kHz in stereo, an uncompressed audio format far more superior than dolby and dts.

however, almost every dvd video disc containd an empty audio_ts folder. This is mainly for compatibility reasons, particularly with older dvd players.
