rip without dolby 2.0?

I have just bought a bunch of dvd movies and was wondering if it would be worth for some of the longer ones (~2hrs or if I want to keep some extras) to leave out the 2 channel audio and just keep the 5.1?

Yes ,I have a home theatre in a box. I for some reason I were to watch a movie upstairs through the tv speakers, would I be missing the other channels of audio or would the dvd be able to downsample on the fly to two speakers?

You would not be missing anything if the 5.1 is dolby digital. If it is DTS, then you wont get any audio through s atsndard set. Only Dolby Digital is downsampled in most players, unless it has a dedicated DTS decoder and 5.1 output on the back.

Having said that, you usually wont save a lot by droppping 2 channel audio - DD 2.0 only takes up around 70 - 80 mb on a standard length film. However, every little bit helps.

2.0 192kbps AC3 for a 90 minute feature will take up about 130 mb

on a longer movie, say for instance Scarface, the 2.0 AC3 audio (spanish) takes up 237 megabytes at a length of about 2 hrs 50 mins, at 192kbps
