I have been trying unsuccessfully to create motion menu's with DVD-LAB. I am using the trial for the "regular" version of DVD-LAB. I have added a M2V file to the menu background, added a JPG pic on top of it with transparency so the motion is visible thru it, and added a title to the screen top. I have tried this 2 ways, both unsuccessful.

    1) do the above and then go straight to COMPILE DVD. doing it this way, I lose the JPG image and the TITLE at screen top, and ONLY see the M2V background in motion and any buttons that were added - I lose the JPG and the TITLE.

    2) render the motion menu, then add back in as background. doing it this way, I get a (large - 3+gig) AVI file, that has all the images and the motion when played. however when I use TMPGenc to convert it to M2V, the resulting M2V does not have any motion to it. It has the TITLE, the JPG, and a static background. I have viewed the M2V from within DVD-lab and from a different player, both show it as static. is there som eother way to convert the AVI back to M2V, or some required settings for TMPGenc to do it properly?

  2. Patrick,

I only use DVDLab occassionally, but in Maestro, I do motion menus using your method 2 and it works fine. I render the motion menu to AVI in Sony Vegas Video 5, encode to m2v using TMPGEnc, and place on the menu. It has worked fine. I don't know why you would be getting a static m2v file. What are your encode settings? Do you watch the preview while it is encoding? If so, does the preview show the motion properly?

Sorry I can't be more help -- but I think that your approach should definitely work.

  3. Method 1 probably would not work.

I do method 2 all the time. Although, I am now using the Pro version beta 10.

Did you view the AVI and see if it came out as a static image?

If not, then it sounds like TMPGENC is having some kind of issue with the AVI DVD-Lab is creating.

the AVI file that DVD-LAB is creating does have the full motion as I viewed it thru several players. It seems either TMPGENC either doesnt like the file or needs certain settings for it to encode properly. or, perhaps the size itself is causing an issue? size of 3+gig on the AVI (approx 45seconds)

To achieve this, you will need something more than just DVD-LAB. You'll also need a video editor, like VideoFactory 2.0.
    Look here: http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/tutorial/motionmenu.html

Scroll down to '2. Motion Menu With Overlay'.
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.
