Help on Protected VCD, can't extract the dat file

Hi erveryone, yesterday my friend gave me a VCD and ask me to cut some clips from it, then burn a new one. I can not extract the dat file to HDD, so I tried couple ways:
1.use cloneCD to make a image, open image file, extract the dat, but the movie can not play in PowerDVD, it shows green screen and beep in audio.
2.use vcd cutter open the dat file directly from the VCD, it failed.

So, I use Nero CD speed to check the DISC, and I found there's a blank area in the middle of the cd(in the red circle), is it some kind of Protection? How can I extract the dat file?
By the way, the VCD plays well in any PC or DVD player.
