  1. I'm trying to archive my VHS collection to DVD. I'm Using an ATI AIW 9600TX for capture with MMC 8.8 and WDM driver version 6.14.10.6240. But of course Macrovision rears it's ugly head. I've tried defeat it with the hacks listed here http://www.digitalfaq.com/capture/atiavi/atiavi.htm; when I run the .bat file I get "patch successful" but it still dosen't allow me to record. That being said:

Does anyone know of any hack to successfully remove macrovision on this version of MMC or WDM?

Or is there any other Version of MMC and WDM that can be patched?

Is thers any other capture software that can be used with ATI cards that defeats Macrovision?

    Thanks for the help.

Not going to happen, trust me. Least not on the software side.

  3. I don't know about any software, etc. I have a Canopus AVDC-100 ad can capture all My movies thru it bypassing the macrovision

Yep been ther done that, my problem pertained to home movies that IMO were setting off the MV. But in any case they didn't work for either the home movie or a commercial movie. Those hacks were created quite a while ago and apparently work with some older ATI cards and older versions of MMC.

If you go all the way back to the Catalyst 2.9 drivers, the MV hacks work -- with a caveat -- you will still experience the alternating light/dark MV. But that can be defeated with various devices such as a SIMA Color Corrector.

If you have a newer card, I'm not sure if the Cat 2.9 will recognize it and work correctly. Also, the newest versions of MMC have a slight problem with the Cat 2.9 drivers. Some feature called "______ look" (I can't remeber the name) doesn't work. I think it's the feature that lets you watch tv, etc., with a translucent desktop.

I do believe the devices which defeat MV (such as the SIMA Color Corrector) will still work with the newer drivers.

  7. I have been using the Sima Color Corrector for the removal of MV with my 7000 AIW with 7.1 MMC and my 9200 AIW with MMC 8.8, with good results. Ebay has them from about $50.00, well worth the price to get rid of the headache of MV.

ATI Catalyst 8.9, the MV hacks from Lordsmurf, and a SIMA Copymaster (SED-CM) work perfect with my AIW 7500 and Radeon VIVO.

Let me correct my response to this there may be something I overlooked. They may or may not help, I don't know. What I do know is they won't do it by themselves.

If your collection is big enough and important enough, you could just spring for a TBC.

    Hi guys.

Funny thing about MV. I was just doing some testings all day with my
ATI Rage Fury Pro card, and I too was suffering from MV - envy. I do
have my TBC-100 (an external card-type TBC) but I haven't yet connected
it. I wish there were a way to rig a 12 volt power supply to it anyone ??

Anyways. I was testing some capture qualities with my VHS tapes of
    * Jeepers Creepers
    * Blue Streak

Using my SIMA SCC, I was able to capture Blue Streak w/out any hint
of MV. However, my Jeepers Creepers would just show a crazy looking
tracking on my capture window. Silly me. At first, I thought it was
my VCR and Tape, and I was actually banging it, when (after 10 minutes)
I realized, "hay.., this is MV, you moran !!" Dah!!
    .
I quickly recovered, and remembered my TBC-100 (not the -1000 unit)

Anyways. I'm in the middle of countless trial n errors with capping
and Line Noise. Still trying to eliminate them. I found that my
internal modem adds to some noise. After yanking it out, I did notice
that some noise disapeared. Anyways. That was just some OT nonsense.

FWIW.., I'm using MMC 7.1 in some tests. that's the version I have from
    my old CD disk.

    Another OT question/comment..

Does anyone know how to shut off the de-interlacer insde MMC v7.1 ??
I use virtualVCR mostly, but it would be nice to be able to shut this
off when my source is not Interlace only (such as my DV CAM projects)
    Thanks.

    Cheers,
    -vhelp

I have one and it works well. It's a video clarifier. Run composite in and take S-video out if you want. It has both composite and S-video inputs and outputs. I only use composite in though and take S-video out, it does seem to improve the image a little when I am doing camcorder tapes.

Straight from tape to ATI does not always look as good as Tape to clarifier and S-video to ATI.

Backup Your VHS Tapes and DVD's to Your DVD Recorder
Removes ALL Copy Protection, Macrovision and CGMS/A
    RCA(composite) and S-Video Input's and Output's
Easy to Connect to Your Existing System
No Batteries - AC Adapter Included
    $99
    $129 - $30 off coupon (30off) =$99 not sure about shipping.

It works for me! ANd they say in the FAQ

Q: I have been burned before. What if the Clarifier™ doesn't work for me?
A: We realize that there is always the possibility that our customers may not be able to make the Clarifier™ work with their particular system. The problems may not have anything to do with copy protection or the Clarifier™. That is why we have a "no questions asked" 30 day return policy.
Mine still works great after about 1 yr or more!

If you find a device called something like Red Box or Big Red (I think), beware it does not work well and is a waist of about $40. The video will play with that device BUT you get the bright/darks still and some thin bands in the upper portion of the video. It does get past the frozen screen images type protection but still has the other problems I mentioned. That was the first one I bought!

Since the protection is in the incomming signal I would think the Facet video should work on any type equipment, although I only have an ATI AIW 7500 radeon I have used it on myself.

As for the hacks mentioned, I used one of them that does work, but I have/had older MMC. The hacks worked for me to get past the frozen screens as I recall, but I still had bright/darks problem. Watchable but annoying.

I tried the Clarifier and ended up sending it back (had no problems returning it). There were some VHS tapes that were not watchable on my ATI AIW 9600 with the Clarifier.
