  1. /EDIT did I post in the wrong section? If so, can a mod move it?
I want to convert my avi's to svcd as it's all the my dvd will play.
I play to get a better one later but it will have to do for now.
I also want to avoid having to use 2 700mb cds rather then one for each avi file.

I have two apps. Cucusoft and WinAVI.
I remember in an older version of WinAVI that would let you set the output size to 1 disk of 700mb. The newest version gives me a popup error "invalid number" when I enter 1. And cucusoft doesn't even that option.

Can someone please tell me an APP or quick/one-step process to convert avi's to svcd and make custom output size. Sorry if this has been answered but I found nothing related to my question on here.

    Thanks,

PS, if anyone cares to suggest a good, cheap dvd player that will play as many formats as possible..most impor. vcd/svcd/kvcd under 70.00. I would appriciate it.

What country are you in? "70.00" what? Dollars, Pounds, Cows?

Update your profile with your location...
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

Thank You! I've never tried that program. It's not complicated or anything is it?

Not too bad. It depends on how adept you are at picking things up. The good thing is that there's plenty of guides for it.

As for cheap "play anything" DVD players - look into whether you can get hold of the CyberHome 400 (I think that's the number) - it's reviewed in the link on the left.

JVC XV-S500, has played everthing I have thrown at it has a lot of good features. Plus it looks very cool.

Coincidentaly the listed price under DVD players to the left is $70. I've seen it advertised by REX Electronics for slightly less.

  7. Thanks for replies. Quicker then I expected.
I haven't been able to figure out how to convert it.
Unless I missed something. VCDEasy doesn't do AVI->SVCD. Which is what I was looking for. Software similar to WinAVI Converter and Cucsoft Video Converter.
Several guides do show a process but it seems long. Any suggestions

"VCDEasy is a VideoCDs (VCD/SVCD) authoring tool that allows you to play/watch your videos your pictures (from digital camera, scanner,...) and your audio files directly on most of the home DVD players, without having to buy a DVD Writer and DVD discs."

"authoring tool" not converting tool. It burns SVCD, not converts files into svcd format. I need a converter that will allow me to set desired size and # of disks all the way down to 1 disk.
    thanks for trying though.
    Anyone else care to help?

Well I would try it but I don't put any freeware apps on my comp because of the spyware (not that I'm saying it has it, but I'm not going to find out).

Ulead Video Studio will do that and much more. Think it's a unrestricted 30 day trial. The only reason I haven't suggested it before is because you seem to be looking for something free or cheap. But you get 30 days to play with it. I had there 3d animation software trial before purchasing and for the most part it was the full version, just stopped working after 30 days.

Cheaper just to get the DVD player if you already have DVD authoring software and a burner.

You need an encoding tool - check them out in the "Tools" section, form the link on the left.

The 4 most popular seem to be (in no particualr order):

    1. TMPGEnc
    2. Canopus ProCoder
    3. Mainconcept MPEG Encoder
    4. Cinemacraft Encoder

The format for SVCD is MPEG2, but at a reduced bitrate compared to MPEG2s for DVD. Check out the specs for SVCD in the "What Is" link, top left of the page.

There's two ways to determine file size:

    1. The length of the footage you're encoding (i.e. time)
    2. The bitrate used.

One or other (or both of these) can be adjusted to get a desired filesize. Check out the Videohelp Bitrate Calculator to see how bitrate and footage length affect filesize.

  12. @thecoalman: I have a dvd-ram drive but i mostly keep avi/vcd/svcd files on my pc and i rather make svcd then spend on money on dvd-r. Ulead Video Studio looks like a heavy application and i don't want something like that.

daamon: Thanks. I'm used tmpenc before but never for converting. once i found winavi i had no use for that or virtualdub etc. Guess i'll have to learn how to use now. But it looks like my best bet so far.
