MPEG1 or MPEG 2 to DVD confusion

Question is...do I need to convert from AVI to MPEG 1 or some other format to have my DVD's play in my Toshiba SD2800 stand alone.

From previous VCD burning, I found my stand alone does not play MPEG2. I tried to burn SVCD's in MPEG2 but it won't work in the player. Now that I have a DVD burner, and want to burn DVD's, do I need to stay with the MPEG1 format? Or will putting them in a DVD change things? I am converting VHS (AVI format from SceneAlyzer) to DVDR's. Do I need to convert them to MPEG-1 format since my stand alone didn't play the SVCD's in MPEG 2. Or am I really on the wrong track. I have done lots of reading on this site and nothing really addressed this. Or I misssed it completely. Please help me understand if I need to convert the AVI's I capture to MPEG 1 or 2. Or if it is DVD, does that make the point moot? Thanks.

When this question is answered I will decide between TMPGEnc, CCEncoder, or Ulead VideoStudio 8
    VS8 edits, I understand.
Undecided on Authoring but again, maybe VS8

The Toshiba 2800 is my main player, works well. It adheres to true DVD (NTSC) and VCD specs. It will take both MPEG1 and MPEG2 discs, though I suggest MPEG2 for DVD unless it's already MPEG1 format.

    Thanks lordsmurf.

I will just go for it then and if the burn doesn't work in my player, I won't qutomatically assume it is the MPEG2 format. That is what I needed to know. Didn't want to make a coaster 1st time out.

I have a trial version of VS8 downloaded. Looks like I will be giving that a try soon. (After Hurricane Frances passes and I am back home)
