  1. I take it they have been removed on purpose ? To stop various persons building up high counts in Off Topic.

An understatement. There have been several threads about nothing other than "I'm king of the post count for today" and "I've got a firm lock on the number three spot for August" or whatever. Really childish stuff :P

The administrator has apparently decided that post counts were more trouble than they were worth, along with "Date joined", because those two items often become status symbols, or "noob alerts", and take away from why we're really here. With a level playing field we can post, and respond, and our posts can be taken at their own value instead of being judged with a pre-conceived "validity".

And if you still want to see post counts, you can click on the "Profile" button of any post and get not only the post count, but the breakdown of posts per forum.

excellent decision, clever people and nice members will now be known by there attitude and willingness to help.Any ignorant person can build up there post count in off topic or by useless posts but it doesnt mean they are helpful and post count was misleading in that way.

I disagree w/ the removal of Post Counts and DOB fields

    My Reasons..
    -----------------

When I help or comment on or whatever, I do not do so based on post counts
of others. But, Just because some people do, and just because some act
childish by using post counts as their arguments, should not make it time
to remove them. (So, now I'm in a daze or left with the feeling of off-balance'ness,
whenever I look at a tread or topic.
    )
It's also inconvientant to have to navigate to another webpage for post
    counts and/or DOB's - - especially when I'm still on dial-up speed, of which
these days, max out at 45k/bits (4k/sec) speeds.

Post counts can be missleading ONLY if the person responding says he/she
has a bigger count than yours. And, anyone wisdom enough, would
realize this. ..Still not worthy of removal though.

I also use my post count as in "index" to my responses. Something I use
as a search tool for my own personal pleasure.

Yes, I vote to bring them back

    Cheers,
    -vhelp

I think the "date joined" often helps when answering questions. Although it can be misleading at times, more often than not, we need to be more explicit and detailed when answering someone new ie... references to the tools section, previous posts etc... Post counts can help in a similar way. If the OT really is the issue, why not just deduct the posts accumulated in OT before they are displayed in the userid box. Wouldn't that just be a simple constant formula ie) totcount - OTcount = displaycnt? Or am I missing something?

Maybe while you're at it, remove the location field, so that we have less Euro/American/Australian/Etc -centric accusations

  11. That's a good idea, but what if is sparked off this "post whoring" in forums where post quality really matters? If we can work a way around that potential problem, I am in favour of this suggestion.

Good idea..I can't believe that some people were pushing like 70% + of their posts in the OT section.

I think the mods can control this with a few friendly nudges at the right time. After a reminder or two, a temporary suspension or resetting the offenders post count to zero (or by half) and posting this in the offending thread would get the message out pretty quickly.

Having post count and join date made it easy to spot shill memberships (ala Naked Geek) and for us to know that somebody is brand new (just joined!) and needs a certain kind of help (or needs to be reminded of the rules).

Having it was valuable, in the video forum. In OT, not so much.

Please keep post count and join date. I have explained why I think so in this post:

As well as others in the OT forum.

Just my opinion. I have noticed the OT forum seemed a little out of control as of late. I log in with 'Latest Posts' and OT dominated the page.

I am just a guest here, as are we all. The management reserves the right to do what they want. I do somewhat disagree with the 'sledgehammer' approach taken, but that is management's right when all else fails.

I liked the post count only where it could be used to differentiate the 'newbies' from the 'old timers'. The suggestions to use '1000+' posts or similar seems to me a good solution. As far as the date of joining, seems to be just a accidental victim of the changes.

OT matters little to me, not the reason I joined or participate. This is one of my hobbies, and this site is one of my favorites. I will continue to stay until my interests change.

So is the search button and how often is that used....

On the location issue, Its more than helpful to know where people are when you get posts asking where can i get X. If their location is stateside i know its not much use me posting where i get mine from.

Date Joined, never noticed that missing.. Would be nice if that could be reinstated as it give repliers a good idea of how much depth of info need posting.
Post count gone who cares... :P
I think it would take a lot of coding work to remove the Off Topic post count out of the stats, i know in other forum software it has been requested but never implemented.

LOL, I missed all the fun

join date is also useless info as you get people who joined a few years back and only post once in a while. A join date back in 2002 for example doesn't mean you know more than someone who joined last week or month

I agree with those who say OT posts shouldn't count and maybe it should be an exclusive forum in it's own right so any passing visitor can't access it. If possible it should also be removed from the latest threads list. Some people here seem to forget that this is and always will be a video help site. Everyone came here initially to learn or share advice about this subject and not to talk or read crap.

Join date and postcount minus OT & Test(does Test count?) posts would be very reasonable . I'd lose 83 posts (4.89%) if I lost the OT/Test posts and most of those are probably in that stupid Word Association thread I started (sorry and I'd be happy with losing those but some OT postcounts I've seen are very high percentages. I could probably triple or even quadruple my post count using OT if I wanted

The vast majority still come here to learn or give advice about it also and again don't want to see or read crap. I was reading the Computer Shopper magazine yesterday and in it was a link to this site which I think is impressive. If I was webmaster I couldn't give a crap whether the OT forum was here or not, as long as those attitudes didn't overflow into the other forums which it has been and those passing through didn't have access to it

I got sick of the attitudes of some members in the DVD-DVDR forum and started giving crap back to them and some took note of my points and accepted that it's just not acceptable sometimes and I respect those Guys. Others just laugh it off as they simply see this site as a playground where they say and do anything they like anonymously. These are the idiots that bring this site down at times as it's doesn't impress me (or the noob sometimes) and I doubt it impresses Baldrick. I ain't a mod but I will still kick anyone back into shape if I see anything that I think is unacceptable in the DVD to DVDR forum and I doubt very few will argue with that

people must live really sad lives when they try to look cool in a 'cyber' world by making someone else feel inferior just because they are less knowledgeable or can't spell etc. I just think of these people as proper saddo's with no 'real' friends at all so they get their kicks online as they can hide behind their monitors jerking off

get 'real' people and keep the shite in OT hidden from most members and share your knowledge elsewhere on the boards instead of your shite 8)

p.s. I would piss myself laughing at how lame some of those postwhores would look like if you took away their OT posts . Go on Baldrick do it
