  1. I have a bunch of MPG files recorded using a digital video recorder...according to GSpot, they've got 720x480 MPEG-2 video at 29.97 FPS and 48 kHz MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio at 192 kb/s. And the "Container" section of GSpot says that it's "DVD "VOB" format". Here's a screenshot of GSpot:
    .

I'm having problems authoring these files to DVD-Video to burn on a DVD...

I demultiplexed one of the MPG files using TMPGEnc Plus, and got an m2v and an mp2 file. But neither IfoEdit nor TMPGEnc DVD Author likes the audio file... IfoEdit creates the VOB file without any audio. TMPGEnc DVD Author gives me an "Illegal audio format" error.

I also tried demultiplexing using DVD2AVI, but when I author using IfoEdit or TMPGEnc DVD Author the audio is badly out of sync with the video.

What else can I try to get around these problems?

Any help is very much appreciated.

  4. Convert the audio into .wav file first with Goldwave.

If Goldwave recognizes the audio file, thats a good chance the problem will be fixed.

If not, have to know more details of the source and capture method.

  5. Thanks for the suggestions.

DVD-Lab gives me dozens of "The byte alignment is out of the range!" dialog boxes when I try to compile a DVD.... I couldn't get it to create anything useful.

For IfoEdit, I followed the instructions at https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/120021.php but then the IFO files showed many different audio streams (see screenshot) and I'm not able to play the resulting VIDEO_TS folder. So no luck there, either.

I had been using TMPGEnc DVD Author v1.5 previously, and it was fine with some of the MPG files and had various problems with the others -- reported errors on some, hung forever on others, etc.

But I downloaded TDA v1.6 today, and that seems to accept the source MPG files. However, when I create the VOB files and then play them, the audio is out of sync. It starts out okay at the beginning of the video, but the video is slower than the audio....and by the end of the 28'01" clip I tested, the video is 3 seconds behind. The output DVD video from TDA 1.6 is the same length as the original source (28 min 01 sec), but the 28:01 video frames in the output are the same as 27:58 from the source video; so the last 3 seconds of the video are missing (but audio is fine).

I would like to be able to use TDA, but the sync problem is an obstacle. The problem occurs even if I use Goldwave to convert to WAV and then use that WAV file.

By the way, in the source mpg files the audio is perfectly in sync with the video.

In addition to 48kHz sampling rate, MPEG audio for DVD needs to have the CRC enabled. This is done while encoding the audio (or when capturing or when the DVD recorder records).

If this is the problem, the only way to fix it is to re-encode the audio file (probably need to convert to WAV first) by any MPEG encoder (e.g. Tmpgenc or MainConcept), selecting audio ES encoding only and making sure that parameters are 48kHz, Stereo, 192kbps, CRC (or Error Protection in Tmpgenc) is enabled.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

If there any any streaming errors in the mpg file that arent detected then the audio will go out of sync.
