  1. I try to preserve my footage from my Hi8 Canon camcorder on CDs, presently as SVCDs, but the final video quality is not very good.
Would a conversion to Divx and copying files on CDs keep a better quality? And if yes, which would be the best settings?

I have a good Hi8 Canon camcorder with S-video output,
    - a computer with a AMD Duron 1300 Mhz 256 Mb RAM, HD 2x15 GB 5400 and a Pinnacle DC10 + capture card with Pinnacle Studio 8 and a CD burner
    - a Philips DVD DivX player DVP 630
    - and a Sony 25" television with composite video input

I do not want to buy presently a DVD burner and a bigger hard disk

and my purpose is to keep the original video/audio quality on CDs.

I can only capture at full quality as a big AVI file, make editing and then would like to convert it to DivX file(s) keeping as much quality as possible. Is it realistic and what would be the best settings?

    Thank you for your advice!

The quality of the capture video as AVI file is very good, very similar to the original footage (capture through Pinnacle Studio and DC10 +)
I don't have a DVD player or burner in my computer, only a CD ROM drive and a CD burner
The Philips DVD DivX player is a standalone one.
And everything, from the camcorder to the capture card and Studio, TV set and DVD player is in PAL.

How is the quality of your captured AVI? The quality of the source is the biggest factor in the quality of your SVCD or DivX discs.

As a general rule, the less processing the better. If you're concerned about using fewer CDs, go with DivX but remember that not everybody has a desktop DVD player that reads DivX discs.

For advice on DivX settings, look to the left for guides under conversion

  4. Go to this site for DivX download

    http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/

After converting your AVIs to DivX, you can burn them to CD.
