  1. Hi all...just cant seem to find the answer to this one.
First up heres what hardware im using-
Pioneer 107 writer (with latest firmware)
    Cyber home standalone dvd player

Ive been converting several Avi`s to dvd with all kinds of different software and different media, after reading through the forums ive now bought some ritek g04`s which seem to be popular.
When i started out i used Tmgenc and burnt to redlabel disk...these didnt work..so i tried verbatim media..some worked, some didnt..then i thought id solved everything when i used dvdsanta!..using this even the redlabels worked..so i tried Winavi to cut down the process time and they still all work fine!
Then i lent some disks out to friends...and none of em could play em!
ive checked all their dvd players on the site and they should all be compatable.

So im guessing its got alot to do with the software (i used nero to burn em once and none worked!) and my question is what software should i use???
ive tried so many combonations its twisting my melon man!

btw my pc has played every disk ive ever done!

All players are not created equal. Neither are encoders. I can think of a few things.

    Bad Media
Burned the media to fast (exceeded the suggested media speed)
Bad Encode (i.e. bitrate spikes are common with TMPGenc. Also ensure your MPEG meets the requirements for NTSC or PAL dvd in regards to resolution, bitrate, audio frequency, and framerate).
Bad Authoring (all authoring software is not created equal)
Non-compliant media (+R for a -R standalone player for example)

As to the fact that they play on your PC, chances are the media is fine. That doesn't eliminate the other possibilities though. A PC is far more tolerant to bitrate, and MPEG aberations than a standalone player is. It's also not uncommon to burn a disk that plays perfectly in your standalone, but won't play anywhere else. Many standalones support xVCD, xSVCD, and xDVD (basically non-standard discs).

A few other things to check...Try a different type of burn in Nero (UDF/ISO instead of DVD Video Template for example).
Make sure you 'close' the dvd after burning. Option should always be enabled for all DVD R/RW media.
Never enable any of the 'relaxed' ISO restrictions.
    Use UDF 1.02
    Never burn a 'multisession' dvd.
Try burning at a lower speed.

You have so many possible variations going on, that it would be extremely difficult to troubleshoot which might be the problem. I'd start with the basic, and ensure that your friends standalone players' support the whatever media your giving them (+/- R/RW). If your using RW, you must also ensure that they support RW as well.

  3. Thanks for the quick reply DJRumpy.

One thing you mentioned stand out...burning the media too fast.
With the updated firmware im able to burn 2 & 4 speed media at 8...and i have been
As for the burning side of things i stopped using nero cuz none worked and it tended to fail sometimes during burning.
I now burn using Dvdsanta or DVD shrink...but niether of these have any settings when it come to burning...do you find nero works ok for you with the settings you mentioned?

I recently bought a dvd from a dodgy geezer at a carboot sale and this didnt work on my standalone...but played ok on my pc and playstation2..so im wondereing is my problem a common one?...or is it just me?

I thought as much. That hack to enable all burning speeds is common for the A07. Use the speed the media is rated for and see if you get better results.

I use nero for everything. I've never had a bad burn. Are you using a current version of nero? Also, what did it error out with on the aborted attempts?

  5. Im using nero 6.3.0.0
The main reason i stopped using nero was because of a post on here where someone with a similar problem was told to try re-authoring and burning with dvd shrink...this seems to get better results for me,the fails were only when using redlabel disk, which personally i find are crap all round, they even failed when backing up PS2 games, where as PS2 backup using nero onto a verbatim is fine.
Ive just converted another avi using dvdsanta,i`ll try ya settings and use nero to burn it at normal speed onto a ritek g04....fingers crossed

    Cheers

  6. Ok...solved this now.

It was dvdsanta`s encoding...i did another avi using winavi...burned two copys one with dvdsanta, and one with nero and they both worked on all the players ive tried so far.
